Out of Production Pair of Maya Lin 1st-Gen Concrete Stools for Knoll Studio

About the Item

This first generation pair of Maya Lin stools are no longer in production, making these Fine examples a rare and coveted collectors set, and is fabricated of molded concrete, unlike the polyethylene (plastic) modern versions of today. These incredible examples of post-modern functional art can be used as a stool, footstool, ottoman, small coffee table or side table or as occasional seating, for indoors or outdoors use, and is signed and dated underneath. In our opinion, these are far greater than the concrete designs by Willy Guhl, since his products were made using asbestos. We do not sell Guhls designs for this reason, and find these Maya Lin for Knoll examples a much better (and safer) choice. *Note* We have a total of 3 available that we acquired from the original owners in a single residence. We have this listing of a pair (set of 2), and another listing of a single. Contact us if you wish to purchase the full set of 3. These original early production examples are no longer in production and are much higher quality and value than the current plastic versions offered by Knoll. Rare and sought after - these examples are in natural sand (tan) color that is the most desirable of the colors that were offered. Introduced in 1998 in celebration of Knoll's 60th anniversary, Maya Lin's collection of "Stones" reflect the famed architect's signature subtlety. Known for her sense of simple, elegant beauty with clear inspirations from nature, these concrete stool is a testament to that conception which can be used indoors or outdoors. These versatile, functional pieces would be a great addition as part of a Classic, contemporary or Mid-Century Modern living room, den, family room, office, covered or outdoor patio, porch or veranda, or consider it as poolside seating. It would also be an Apt choice for a corporate, retail or hospitality location such as a boutique hotel lobby, cocktail bar, members club, workspace studio, executive office or in a luxe clothing emporium. Measurements: 15" H x 27" W x 19" D Good original vintage condition. Signs of use and patina commensurate with age are evident. A couple of minor chips but presents well and ready to be used immediately.

  • Roche Bobois Early Production Mah Jong Elements, Pair, Signed, 1970s
    By Roche Bobois, Hans Hopfer
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
This beautiful pair of Roche Bobois Mah Jong elements by Hans Hopfer are from the earlier years of the design in the 1970s, before they created the Missoni and Jean Paul Gaultier collaborations where they gained a new look. This pair of Mah Jong elements are without a seat back, so they are ideal as a pair of large floor cushions or stacked on top of another as a large ottoman. At home, we have another pair of these that we use for our dogs as a large dog bed which we humans also use. When we want more floor space we can stack them and push them against the wall. When we have guests and need more seating in the living room we pull them over and stack next to a coffee table. But most of the time it is side by side for the dogs to use and when us humans need a quick NAP - we use it as a daybed underneath a skylight or can lay with the dogs for a quick cuddle. This pair of Mah Jong sectional sofa elements was reupholstered with new fabric over the original interior foam, original bottom lining and labels. The visible fabric is brand new and is in mint condition. Everything else was cleaned, but is original. So it’s the best of both worlds - for those who want a clean, new fabric but also an early production year example of a Classic design. Photos of another pair that we have, in its original fabric are in the photos of this listing. This pair of early production Roche Bobois Mah Jong elements would work great in a Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian Modern or Danish modern home or penthouse apartment but could also look fantastic in a contemporary or Postmodern room. Also consider mixing it up in a traditional, transitional, classical or Art Deco room with a splash of juxtaposition. Would also be an Apt choice in a commercial project such as a hotel lobby lounge or members club, creative design studio or high-rise executive office. Consider using as side chairs, bedside seating...

  • Original 'Birillo' Barstools Set by Joe Colombo for Zanotta, c. 1971, Signed
By Joe Colombo, ICF New York, Zanotta
    Located in Los Angeles, CA
A rare collectors set of five (5) 'Birillo' bar-height barstools designed in 1971 by Joe Colombo for Zanotta, Italy, retailed by ICF New York. Signed underneath with Zanotta embossed logo and design information on each chair and ICF New York retailer labels on some of the chairs. These examples are original early year productions and ideal for collectors and modern art and design investors. These examples feature red vintage patent leatherette upholstery and white fiberglass bases. It's very hard to find a single Birillo stool let alone find a matched set of five bar-height barstools. If you are looking for a large set of modern bar height barstools, don't hesitate because once these are gone it will be a difficult opportunity to replicate. This early Post-Modern quintessential design is often misspelled 'Brillo' and even sometimes 'Brillio' but as seen documented in the 1978 Zanotta catalogue, the correct spelling is 'Birillo'. This set of five Joe Colombo Birillo...
