James Mont Console Cabinet

About the Item

Grand scale console cabinet in hand rubbed black lacquer finish by James Mont (1904-1978), the "godfather of exotic modernism" who introduced "orientalism" into American 20th century modern design. Upper section consisting of a pair of upright cabinets connected by a lattice element and a bridge of open shelving. If requested we can install a back panel in matching black or mirror. Each side cabinet has four adjustable shelves and highly stylized doors applied with hand carved bamboo leaves overlapping Greek key geometric molding. Lower section consists of a case fitted with two large drawers flanked by single door cabinets with one adjustable shelf. The motif of the Greek key is continued in the linear molding on the door/drawer faces. James Mont was not known for his restraint or subtlety, for sure, so this piece is uncharacteristically subdued with its elegantly understated monochrome black finish, like a blind monogram. Inside top drawer is branded signature "James Mont Design". Excellent restored condition. American, circa 1950. Dimensions: 15.25" D x 81.75" W x 77.25" H. Shown with optional James Mont silver leaf swan tables.
