English Chippendale Mahogany Architect’s Desk or Design Table, circa 1780

About the Item

A wonderful English Chippendale crotched mahogany architect’s desk or design table with adjustable rectangular top that raises from a flat position to an elevated standing position, with wooden supports and a removable paper rest, surmounting a single front pull-out drawer with brass handle, integrated front legs, and a tooled leather top writing surface with tooled gilt border which slides back to reveal a compartmentalized interior and side tray in the right front corner. This multi-functional desk dates to the late 18th century and is in very good overall condition, with some veneer shrinkage cracks visible (accentuated in images with flash photography), losses and cracks visible on the wooden supports, as well as other imperfections and expected wear from age and use. Dimensions: 32 in H (down) x 42 in W x 26 in D, with the top 54 in H when fully extended to standing height.
