Mathieu Matégot - „Soumba“ Side Tables - 1953 by Atelier Matégot, France

About the Item

Set of Three ’Soumba’ Side Tables by Mathieu Matégot in 1953 Absolutely outstanding colors! Made by Atelier Matégot, France from perforated sheet metal, standing on small brass feet. Mathieu Matégot (1910-2001) was one of the most renowned French artists of the 1950s. Previously a woman’s clothing designer, he learned metalworking techniques as a prisoner of war in the 1940s and started designing furniture upon his release. Matégot pioneered many of the characteristics we now recognise as defining Mid-Century design. This included metal-mounted rattan, steel tubing and the perforated metal seen in these tables. This trio of tables represent an opportunity to own an iconic vintage design, from one of the most prolific French designer’s in history. Dear interior designers, architects and of course all other interested parties - due to the image compression of 1stdibs the photos of the articles shown here are unfortunately mostly rather spongy and possibly not suitable for customer presentations. By Skipper, Angelo Mangiarotti
    Located in Munster, NRW
Rare Angelo Mangiarotti Eros marble table. 1971 manufactured by Skipper, Italy. 72.5cm high, 66cm x 44cm... "happiness comes from correctness.“, by Angelo Mangiarotti, architect, designer and professor, born in Milan in 1921. Perhaps because as a visiting professor in Chicago in the mid-1950s he met not only Frank Lloyd Wright, but also Walter Gropius and Mies Van der Rohe. But maybe it just describes his profound architectural understanding of construction and materiality that always influenced his design. And precision is an essential component of his series of “eros” tables developed for skipper in 1971. They consist only of a marble slab and also made of marble column feet that “slot” into prefabricated openings through their conically shaped upper end. The weight of the slab stabilizes the structure like the end stone of a vault. Due to the pure marble...
