Dining Table Model PK54 Designed by Poul Kjaerholm, Denmark, 1963

About the Item

Dining table model PK54 designed by Poul Kjaerholm for E Kold Christensen, Denmark, 1963. Flint-rolled Cippolino marble and steel. Stamped. Dimensions: H: 65 cm / 25 1/2 " D: 140 cm / 55 " Combining the dining table with Poul Kjaerholm's model PK9 dining chairs makes for an attractive pairing. One of Poul Kjærholm's iconic creations is the dining table model PK54, which he designed for E. Kold Christensen in Denmark in 1963. The PK54 dining table is a testament to Kjærholm's mastery in working with steel and his dedication to clean aesthetics. The table features a simple yet striking design, with a sturdy stainless steel frame that supports a large Cippolino marble tabletop. The PK54 dining table encapsulates Poul Kjærholm's design philosophy, reflecting his commitment to functionalism and his ability to elevate everyday objects into works of art. This piece remains an enduring symbol of mid-century modern design, characterized by its timeless elegance and enduring relevance. Paired with the dining table, the PK9 chairs exemplify Kjærholm's distinctive design philosophy. Crafted with a stainless steel frame, the chairs feature a unique form that combines a geometrically shaped base with a gracefully curved backrest. The seat and backrest are upholstered in supple leather, adding a touch of luxurious comfort to the sleek steel structure. Born in 1929 in Øster Vrå, Denmark Poul Kjaerholm studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen before embarking on an apprenticeship as a blacksmith. He would later return to the Academy as a lecturer succeeding Ole Wanscher and remain there till his death in 1980. Kjaerholm’s furniture designs, characterized by clean lines and a minimalist sensibility, embody the essence of Scandinavian design principles. Inspired by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Kjaerholm admired Mies' minimalist approach and his famous dictum "less is more." Mies van der Rohe famously declared that "steel and glass are the materials of our age," and this sentiment resonated with Kjærholm, who integrated stainless steel frames into many of his furniture designs. Kjærholm's collaboration with his friend E. Kold Christensen, a prominent Danish manufacturer, produced his more iconic pieces like the present dining set, PK22 chair and the PK80 daybed. Poul Kjaerholm’s innovative designs earned him international acclaim and a place among the most influential designers of the era, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire contemporary designers.
