Original Paul Rusconi Painting of Famous Pop-Culture Skateboarder, Paul Cardiel

About the Item

Very large, original digital screenprint on Plexiglas with nail polish on C-print, mounted to Sintra board painting of the famous hall of fame skateboard icon, John Joseph Cardiel (born December 14, 1973) by illustrious American contemporary artist, Paul Rusconi. The subject, John Joseph Cardiel, one of the top ten skateboarders in the world, is a former professional skateboarder and snowboarder who has been a core member of the Anti-Hero Skateboards company since 1995. Cardiel was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame in 2015 and was named Skater of the Year in 1992 by Thrasher Magazine. Rusconi's first solo exhibition, American Boarders, was at the Stellan Holm Gallery in New York, which featured the world’s top fourteen skateboarders. This painting was part of this exhibition in 2010. Several of Paul Rusconi's works have made impressive sales at auction houses such as Heritage, Sotheby’s and Phillips de Pury. A similar skater work by Paul Rusconi, from the same skater series which this original work of art is part of, sold at Sotheby's for $71,000.00. The artist, Paul Rusconi (born 1965), is a well known American contemporary artist who is currently living and working in Los Angeles. Born and raised in California, Paul Rusconi has and continues to investigate the portrait with his own photo-based images as well as found or sourced images from popular culture. Rusconi’s fascination of pop-culture and its huge and wide-reaching skate sub-culture made Rusconi focus on a group of portraits of today's 14 most influential skateboarders in the world, one being John Cardiel, the subject of the artwork currently being offered on 1stdibs. His work is a digital screening process often combined with nail polish, oil paint, engine enamel and monochromatic photography. The work is layered and framed. The shadow image on the monochromatic photographic is a simple projection through the Plexiglas. There is no image on the actual photograph until one is projected on it by the digital screen. His own photography is used for images that create a grey scale from blue, magenta, yellow and black. Up close all that is evident are colorful dots – and from about 12 feet away – those dots turn into a grey scale or what looks to be a black-and-white image. This notion came from the observation that a grey-scale could be created from color and therefore such a grey-scale could be broken down into color. Works by Rusconi are included in the collections of numerous private individuals and public art institutions, including The White House, The Carnegie Art Museum, The Frederick R. Weisman Art Foundation, the Interface Foundation, the Castilla Foundation, Madrid, and The International Contemporary Art Foundation, to name a few. Reverse of painting bears the artists metal plaque stating that the work of art is authentic, unique and an original. Painting is framed in a custom espresso finish wood frame and measures 68 1/2” H x 48” W x 3” D. Unframed painting measures 65 1/2” H x 45 1/2” W.

  • Original Space Artist Andreas Nottebohm Acrylic on Aluminum Painting KNM 1387
    Located in Tustin, CA
Visionary, abstract original acrylic on aluminum painting by famous NASA Space Artist, Andreas Nottebohn, titled "KNM 1387" depicts a colorful, otherworldly scene on a shimmering sheet of scored metal. This incredible celestial painting frees the viewer from a one dimensional perspective by suggesting a vast and mysterious distance. Information on the back of the painting states, “KNM 1387 Spec 1 of 48 similar original paintings 1996 30 x 24 Acrylic on Aluminum”. Hand signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Very nicely custom framed in a transitional style black frame with wide silver inner lining. Framed, the painting measures approximately 35" high x 29" wide x 2" deep. Unframed painting measures approximately 30" high x 24" wide. One of the key innovators of metal painting, Nottebohm creates what might be called sculptures on a flat plane. By removing microscopic layers from the metal surface, he transforms the material into patterns of shimmering light. The unusual luminous quality of Nottebohm's work comes from the aluminum surfaces he scores, using a variety of manual and machine tools. Aluminum can create light and movement that you cannot create with anything else. It is similar to the sun reflecting on water, and you see one painting from one side and another painting from another side. East German born (1944) Andreas Nottebohm moved to Munich as a teenager and immigrated to the San Francisco Bay area of the United States in 1979, after touring the U.S. for a one man exhibition. While in Germany in the 1970s, he was one of the co-founders of the Society for Art and Science in Munich. Around the time he relocated to the United States, he was invited to participate in the NASA Art...

  • Sumptuous Large Original William Foster Still Life Painting of a Banquet Table
    By William Frederick Foster
    Located in Tustin, CA
Sumptuous, very large, original oil on canvas board, still life painting depicting a banquet table. This painting is a virtuoso display of how artist William Frederick Foster (1883-1953) captures texture in paint. You can see this in the mouth watering fruit, crustacea and other samplings laid upon the table as well as the masterfully painted reflective surfaces of the copper tea pot, wine bottle and the gathered table cloth. Painting is framed in the original wood frame. Painting framed measures 34.5” high x 46” wide x 1.5” deep. Painting unframed measures 30.5” high x 42.5” wide. William Foster was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1883. He became a noted figure painter and illustrator, living the last twenty-one years of his career in Los Angeles, California. At age 12, he moved with his family to Colorado, but in 1898, he returned to Cincinnati and enrolled at the Art Academy where he studied with Joseph Henry Sharp and Frank Duveneck. His early ambition was to be a violinist, but he was re-focused on fine art when he saw a painting by Albert Ceck Wenzell. In 1902, he went to New York City where he painted scenery for theaters, auditoriums, and large department stores. He also studied at the New York School with Robert Henri and William Merritt Chase, and from 1903 to 1931, he worked as an illustrator and with a brief teaching stint in 1919 at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1903, he sold his first illustration, a depiction of high society, to Life magazine, and the style was very similar to Wenzell. From that time, he worked for most of the major magazines including Collier's, The Saturday Evening Post and Harper's Monthly. In 1926, he won the National Academy of Design's Thomas B. Clarke Prize for the best figure composition painted in the United States by a non-academician. The following year, he was voted an Associate Member based on his recognition for a figure work titled The Girl in Brown. During World War I, he operated his own ambulance in France as a member of the American Volunteer Motor Ambulance Corps and also received mention as a camoufleur artist. Returning to the U.S., he resumed his illustration work and moved to Chicago, where he taught at the Art Institute. Foster moved to Los Angeles in 1932 and devoted his energy to painting, exhibiting and teaching. He taught at the Chouinard School of Art in Los Angeles and gave private classes in his studio. He also worked on a mural project at the Hearst estate...

  • William Keith Original Tonal Oil Painting of California Misty Woodland Landscape
    Located in Tustin, CA
Original oil painting on canvas, Tonal-style landscape painting by listed, deceased, famous artist, William Keith (1838-1911). Painting features a group of majestic trees near a pond of water at deep dusk or early dawn. A lone shepherd, seated beneath a tree, watches over his herd of sheep as they make their way down to the water. The tone is relaxed and misty, with softly blurred details and an air of hazy tranquility. William Keith was a Scottish-American painter famous for his plein air California landscapes, characterized by how the landscapes captured feelings and emotions, rather than actual details. He was neither pure Realist nor pure Impressionist. During the 1870s, Keith painted a number of six-by ten-foot panoramas, including "Kings River Canyon" (Oakland Museum, originally owned by Governor Leland Stanford) and "California Alps" (Mission Inn, Riverside). These competed with paintings of similar size and subject matter by famous California landscape painters Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Hill. Keith is associated with Tonalism and the American Barbizon school of painting...
