Hunt Slonem, Oil on Canvas, Mystic Jays, Blue Jays Painting, Signed, Dated, 2010

About the Item

A Hunt Slonem Oil on Board of Two Mystic Jay Birds, Signed and Dated in Verso A rare and fine original oil on board acquired directly from the artist by a NYC aristocrat. This large and impressive detailed piece is set in a wonderful antique gilt gold carved frame. Hunt Slonem is a well-renowned American artist known for his neo-expressionist paintings of butterflies, rabbits, and tropical birds. The artist creates exotic forms with expressive and highly textural brushstrokes that are full of intense color. His compositions often consist of flat spaces with simple forms pushed to the front of the picture plane. His work tends to embrace the ephemeral beauty of nature, a characteristic that brings a nurturing, spiritual effect to his painting suggesting metamorphosis, repose, and a sensation of touching the illimitable. In addition, Slonem works with installations, sculpture, and the restoration of historic spaces, often pairing his paintings with collected objects and various materials to create colorfully monumental environments that are widely noted for their otherworldliness Framed; height: 32.25 x 25.25 in. Unframes; height: 21.5 x 14.5 in. American, 2010

    Located in AMSTERDAM, NL
powerful work “Snake in wonderland” by Ernst Vijlbrief (1938-2010). The expressive brushstrokes are typical for the style of Vijlbrief, connecting him to CoBrA and the expressive action paintings of Karel Appel. This small work is a great example of the early style of Vijlbrief and a highly collectible piece. Signed in top corner and verso signed, dated and titled. Ernst Vijlbrief, born November 25th, 1934, in Utrecht studied at the Institute for Applied Arts Education in Amsterdam and at the Academia di Porta Romana in Florence (1956-1959). In 1961 he took part in the large exhibition “Jongere Nederlandse schilders, beeldhouwers en architekten: Liga Nieuw Beelden” in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam. Next to his work as an artist, Vijlbrief was an engaged board member of several artist associations, like the Beroepsvereniging van Beeldende Kunstenaars (Professional Association of Visual Artists). In 1973 he cofounded Bond van Beeldende Kunstarbeiders (BBKA) in Utrecht, with artist Bob Bonies.
