Starting in the 1950s, Picasso worked with the linocut printer Hidalgo Arnéra to produce posters for ceramic exhibitions and bullfights. The printer described their working method as such: “Picasso worked at night; in the morning, Marcel the chauffeur brought what he had completed to the print shop with notes added by Jacqueline Roque. I pulled the proofs and returned them to [his home] La Californie at exactly 1:30. This regular rhythm of working continued for eight years, every day, except Saturday and Sunday.” This idiosyncratic procedure speaks to the collaborative effort of these printmaking ventures, which included his partner, his printer, and his chauffeur

About the Artist:
Jean Lurçat was a French painter, ceramist and tapestry designer, born in Bruyères on July 1, 1892 and died in Saint-Paul-de-Vence on January 6, 1966. He owes his fame mainly to his tapestry work, which he thoroughly executed in the twentieth century. He is frequently called the most instrumental figure in reviving the art of designing and weaving tapestries in the 20th century.
Although his first tapestries were executed and exhibited in 1917, it was not until 1936 that Lurçat turned from being primarily a painter to designing tapestries. In 1939 he and the painters Toussaint Dubreuil and Marcel Gromaire went to Aubusson, a French town historically associated with tapestry weaving since at least the 16th century, and established a centre for the making of modern tapestries in cooperation with the master weaver François Tabard. With brass hooks still attached, the reverse clearly show that these images have never been removed or replaced since they would have been framed in the 1900s. Depicting life’s process of the Afro American, from courting to creating a family. We have never seen the like and in this collection/condition, you are unlikely to see the same ever again.
