"Fighter's Locker Room, " Large, Rare Print with Watercolor with Nude Boxers

About the Item

Executed and hand-watercolored by the artist, James Sheppard, this large and impressive print depicts three boxers in various stages of undress in a men's locker room, the figures highlighted in warm tones of rust and golden yellow. Sheppard was known for his depiction of nude and semi-nude figures inspired by Peter Paul Rubens, but this print also shows his debt to some of the great artists of the 1930s and 1940s such as Paul Cadmus and Reginald Marsh. In fact this image is reminiscent of the fleshy energy of Cadmus' "YMCA Locker Room" from 1934, though in Sheppard's case the group of men is considerably less rowdy. Sheppard indicated that this was his Artist's Proof, which may be why he added a layer of watercolor, making this the only example of this piece so embellished. (Dimensions include matte and frame; image is 19.75 inches high by 16 inches wide.).
