Cartier 18ct Gold And Diamond Hummingbird Brooch Circa 1960s

About the Item

A charming gold and diamond stylised hummingbird brooch by Cartier c.1960s, the body finely modelled in 18ct yellow gold with a textured finish and carefully formed feathers, the beak and feet in polished gold, the eye set with a hexagonal shaped diamond and the top of the wing embellished with a cluster of six round brilliant cut diamonds in platinum rubover settings, perched on a branch with a diamond in the end, all to a single pin brooch fitting on the reverse. Cartier created a fantastic menagerie of birds during the 1950s and 60s in all manner of sizes, shapes and gemstones. This is a particularly lovely example which showcases the quality of craftsmanship one expects from Cartier. The wonderful engraving on the gold shows such attention to detail (even the nostrils on the beak are defined) which really gives the piece a life-like quality and feeling of movement.
