Victorian Archaeological Revival Gold Cross Pendant Brooch

About the Item

A Victorian archaeological revival gold cross pendant brooch, the Greek cross composed of five square panels, each square bearing to the centre a granulated rosette demonstrating fine rope work and granulation, terminating to granulated acanthus leaf-design arms, with circular glazed locket compartment to the reverse, suspended from a detachable stylised rosette pendant loop, overall dimensions 7.6cm by 5.2cm, circa 1840, gross weight 28 grams. This wonderful archaeological revival pendant comes from the collection of Bentley & Skinner, the London jewellers by appointment to both Her Majesty the Queen and His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. During the mid-nineteenth century, jewellers became fascinated with recreating the styles and techniques of the ancient world. This was due in part to excavations and exhibitions that captivated the imaginations of nineteenth century Europeans. This piece features a square Greek cross set with and surrounded by fine yellow gold decorations in the style of Ancient motifs. Rosettes adorn the inside of the cross and acanthus leaves adorn the outside, combining to create a fabulously antique design. The rosettes and leaves are decorated with extremely fine filigree and granulation work, echoing the techniques of the ancient period. This piece can be worn as either a pendant or a brooch, giving it versatility. Should you choose to make this purchase we would be delighted to send it to you in a Bentley & Skinner handmade leather case packed in a gift-wrapped Bentley & Skinner black and gold presentation box. Shortly afterwards we will send you on a valuation for insurance purposes for your reference and safekeeping.
