Louise Nevelson Art
American, 1899-1988
Louise Nevelson was one of the leading American female sculptors of the 20th century, and she did it on her own terms. She was a pioneer of installation art and created large-scale monochromatic sculptures that are today known for their provocative, compartmentalized forms. While her assemblages involved a range of materials, she is best known for her wooden sculptures. Working in a single color was her signature, and all-encompassing color demanded an all-encompassing focus for this artist — she even kept separate studios for work in black, white and gold.
Nevelson was born in what is now Ukraine in 1899 and emigrated to the United States with her family in 1905. She moved to New York City as a young woman in 1920 to study at the Art Students League. In the 1930s, Nevelson traveled around Europe, came into contact with the works of Picasso, studied with Hans Hofmann and assisted Diego Rivera in New York City.
Nevelson had her first solo show in 1941 at the Nierendorf Gallery in New York. In the late 1940s, she studied with Stanley William Hayter and worked as a ceramicist in the workshop of revered furniture designer Vladimir Kagan, who let her take scraps from the factory to use in her sculptures. (As a child, Nevelson had also worked with discarded wood from her father's lumber yard.)
By the early 1950s, Nevelson had traveled to Guatemala and Mexico. She was inspired by pre-Columbian art and the totemic works of ancient cultures. Nevelson began creating the first of her iconic wood sculptures and later participated in the legendary “Sixteen Americans” exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. Her work was acquired by prominent institutions in the years that followed.
Nevelson made reliefs in shadow boxes and was for a time affiliated with New York City’s Sidney Janis Gallery as its first female Abstract Expressionist artist (her work was abstract but she also drew on the Cubist and Constructivist movements). In the early 1960s, Nevelson showed her art in Chicago, Manhattan, Paris and West Germany. It was around this time that she exhibited at Pace Gallery in Boston and New York. The gallery represented her for the duration of her career.
Nevelson died in 1988, but her legacy is immense. Her work is held in virtually every major American art museum, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art. Her permanent large-scale public sculptures are installed all over the country, including in Louise Nevelson Plaza in New York City's Financial District.

"Reflections V" is an example from her 1983 portfolio, "Reflections I-V" consisting of six large-scale prints. These prints contain signature elements found throughout Nevelson's prints; ripped or collage-like forms as well as the use of fabric, lace, and toile in the printing process. However one of the strongest characteristics of the "Reflections" series is her new uninhibited use of color.
Here it is used to maximum effect. This work features unexpected elements of fluorescent turquoise and fuschia that punctuate her signature layered collage-like composition. Nevelson's late prints are truly some of her best.

Many of the leading, ground-breaking American abstract artists experienced success in post-war Europe. Nevelson was notably well-embraced in Italy arguably because of parallels to Arte Povera in her work. She had an important and enduring connection to Italy, beginning with representing America at the Venice Biennale in 1962. Nevelson would then exhibit at the legendary Studio Marconi in Milan during the succeeding decades. This fruitful relationship led Nevelson to start working with Italian printmakers during the 1970s.
This impressive aquatint is a paradigm of both the era and Nevelson's later printmaking, notable for its use of metallic elements, color, and collage. This work features unexpected shades of magenta, lime green, and rust, which punctuate her signature monochromatic black forms that sweep the surface of the page creating an intriguing architectural form.

Collage was an important part of Louise Nevelson's practice. The process mirrored her approach to sculpture; taking disparate elements and assembling or uniting them into a complex whole.
Similar to many of her American contemporaries, Nevelson delved into printmaking. She worked with the leading printing studios in America adopting new techniques while expanding her aesthetic and oeuvre considerably.
This collage was the final maquette or design, that would be screen printed becoming "By the Lake" (from "Façade: In Homage to Edith Sitwell"). Nevelson worked with Chiron Press in New York, which had opened in 1962 and was just a stone's throw from her 11th Street home studio.

Katherine Porter is an American artist born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1941. She received her BA from Colorado College in 1963. Katherine Porter received an honorary doctorate from Colby College. She has shown twice in the Whitney Biennial and solo exhibitions at the Knoedler Gallery in London, the Nina Nielsen Gallery in Boston, and the Andre Emmerich and Salander-O'Reilly Galleries in New York. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Tel Aviv Museum and Bezalel Museum in Jerusalem. Her exhibitions include biennials in 1976 and 1981 at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City; 1980 at the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts; 1981, Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire; 1985, Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts; and 1987 at the Sidney Janis Gallery, New York City. The P&D movement wanted to revive an interest in minor forms such as patterning which at that point was equated with triviality. The prevailing negative view of decoration was one not generally shared by non-Western cultures, The Pattern and Decoration movement was influenced by sources outside of what was considered to be fine art. Blurring the line between art and design, many P&D works mimic patterns like those on wallpapers, printed fabrics, and quilts. There is a close connection between the Pattern and Decoration movement and the Feminist art movement. The P&D movement arose in opposition to the Minimalist and Conceptualist movements. This is from a series of prints Boxer produced at Tyler Graphics between 1975 and 1979. Over this period, he created several series of intricately rendered figurative works, illustrating whimsical scenes featuring animals, plants and nubile winged figures. Boxer had, however, been making drawings of this nature throughout his career, and he insisted they were closely connected to his abstracts, made with similar gestures and motivation.
The Tate Museum received twenty-five of Stanley Boxer’s prints as a gift of Kenneth Tyler from Tyler Graphics, comprising a complete portfolio of Ring of Dust in Bloom, 1976, an incomplete portfolio of Carnival of Animals, 1979, and two individual prints. This work is from Carnival of Animals, a portfolio of fourteen intaglio prints on handmade paper. Tate holds eleven of the prints from this portfolio (Elephants, Swan and Fossils are not in Tate’s collection).
Stanley Boxer (1926-May 8, 2000) was an American abstract expressionist artist best known for thickly painted abstract works of art. He was also an accomplished sculptor and printmaker. He received awards from the Guggenheim Fellowship and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Boxer was born in New York City, and began his formal education after World War II, when he left the Navy and studied at the Art Students League of New York. He drew, painted, made prints, and sculpted. His work was recognized by art critic Clement Greenberg, who categorized him as a color field painter, A group that included
Barnett Newman, Clyfford Still, and Mark Rothko and was a form of Abstract Expressionism and later included Helen Frankenthaler, Ad Reinhardt, Kenneth Noland, Gene Davis, Jules Olitski, Raymond Parker and Morris Louis. Boxer himself was adamant in rejecting this stylistic label. Over the years, he remained loyal to the materially dense abstract mode on which his reputation rested.. Art critic Grace Glueck wrote "Never part of a movement or trend, though obviously steeped in the language of Modernism, the abstract painter Stanley Boxer was a superb manipulator of surfaces, intensely bonding texture and color."
In 1953 Boxer had his first solo exhibition of paintings in New York City, and showed regularly thereafter until his death. His paintings and sculpture were represented in New York City during the late 1960s through 1974 by the Tibor de Nagy Gallery, then by the André Emmerich Gallery from 1975 until 1993, and finally by Salander-O'Reilly Galleries until its demise in 2007. Richard Waller, director of the University of Richmond's Harnett Museum of Art, describes his evolution as an artist: You can see the shift from working with figurative imagery in the 1940s and early '50s to abstraction in the late '50s. The abstraction in the late '60s and '70s was more derived from color-field issues. In the 1980s, Boxer really hit his stride in larger works with lots of thick paint and splashes of color. He sold a lot, and his success in the art world in the 1980s gave him the freedom to do what he wanted to do most.
He was married to painter and artist Joyce Weinstein. The Boca Raton Museum of Art in Florida hosted an exhibition entitled Expanding Boundaries: Lyrical Abstraction Selections from the Permanent Collection.
At the time the museum issued a statement that said in part: "Lyrical Abstraction arose in the 1960s and 70s, following the challenge of Minimalism and Conceptual art. Many artists began moving away from geometric, hard-edge, and minimal styles, toward more lyrical, sensuous, romantic abstractions worked in a loose gestural style. These "lyrical abstractionists" sought to expand the boundaries of abstract painting, and to revive and reinvigorate a painterly 'tradition' in American art. "Characterized by intuitive and loose paint handling, spontaneous expression, illusionist space, acrylic staining, process, occasional imagery, and other painterly techniques, the abstract works included in this exhibition sing with rich fluid color and quiet energy. Alan Shields came of age artistically in the late 1960s in New York. Expanding the boundaries of Minimalism, he became known as a master of aesthetic invention through his wide-ranging exploration of materials and techniques. His mixed media works often contain combinations of traditional silkscreen processes combined with found materials. New York Times critic Roberta Smith wrote in her 2005 obituary for the artist: "Mr. Shields's work combined expanses of gorgeous stained color, reminiscent of Helen Frankenthaler's canvases, with the humbler crafts and a Gypsy sense of portability." Critic Robert Hughes has described Shields as a brilliant bricoleur who could, and often did, make art out of just about anything. He became an innovative printmaker, experimenting with handmade paper and turning out editions in which each print was unique. After his passing, Shields was awarded a Judith Rothschild Foundation grant given to recently deceased abstract artists whose work is of the highest quality but merits further recognition.

Louise Nevelson (1899-1988) is one of the most revered and unique artists of the 20th century.
There has been a tremendous renewal of interest and appreciation for Nevelson’s work in recent years. In 2021, a new auction record of $1.35 million was established for one of Nevelson’s signature wall sculptures.
Despite such monumental achievements, Nevelson remains significantly undervalued compared to her male peers. While this is troubling and surprising, there is a great opportunity for savvy collectors to acquire top works that are bound to appreciate.
While Nevelson is best known for her work as a sculptor, like many of her American contemporaries, Nevelson expanded her practice as an artist by exploring the many different branches of printmaking as the medium experienced a mid-century renaissance.
"Six Point Star" is a paradigm of Nevelson's printmaking practice. Nevelson utilized the rare printmaking technique of cast paper, whereby paper fiber or pulp is formed using a mold, and employed to create a relief. The striking features of the work have a classic Nevelson form and elaborately patterned texture, in a mink-like color.
Not surprisingly this work can be found in several prominent museum collections including the MoMA the United States Library of Congress, the Brooks Museum of Art, and several others.
Today, Louise Nevelson’s work can be found in major museum collections around the world. An increasing number of public collections are reinstalling her works in their displays from their permanent collections including the Whitney in New York City, which has the largest holding of her oeuvre internationally.

Although Nevelson is best known for her work as a sculptor, like many of her American contemporaries, Nevelson explored the many different branches of printmaking, as the field experienced a mid-century renaissance.
Executed extremely early in her career, this etching is a particularly rare and unique example of Nevelson's work as it features three figures, a motif that is otherwise excluded throughout her oeuvre.
This work is a striking precursor to Nevelson’s iconic work in sculpture. The three fragmented figures, comprised of elongated geometric shapes and angular faces, are an early example of Nevelson’s inclination towards Cubism. As with most of her etchings from this period, this work is realized in heavy black ink, her signature monochromatic palette that evokes a mysterious intensity.
