Yves Saint Laurent
French designer Yves Saint Laurent pioneered “cross-design” in fashion, taking inspiration from street trends to modernize haute couture.
Saint Laurent was the first to launch a ready-to-wear label, YSL Rive Gauche Prêt-à-Porter. He was the first couturier to open boutiques for both men and women. Using traditional menswear fabrics and designs for women, Saint Laurent also literally cross-dressed, giving men and women alike chic pant suits, elegant tuxedo jackets and urban safari gear.
By blurring gender-specific design, Saint Laurent empowered individual style while creating a scissor-sharp fashion aesthetic of sensual ease and beauty. Many of his designs are today considered timeless classics. Saint Laurent also consistently used Black models, like Mounia, Iman and Naomi Campbell, and he drew endless inspiration from different ethnicities and cultures, in no small part because of his Algerian roots.
Born to French parents in Oran, Algeria, in 1936, Saint Laurent went to Paris at age 17 to study fashion at the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture. Just two years later, in 1955, his remarkable sketches were shown to Christian Dior, then the world’s reigning couturier, who hired him immediately.
Surprisingly soon thereafter, Dior publicly chose Saint Laurent as his successor, which sadly proved prescient when the fashion legend died unexpectedly, in 1957. A mere slip of a youth, the 21-year-old Saint Laurent was nevertheless up to the challenge. He shook the traditional couture clientele to its core with youthful silhouettes and styles like the A-line trapeze dress that hung with seeming effortlessness from the shoulders, the antithesis of the pinched waists and molded skirts that had been all the rage after the deprivations of World War II.
After a mandated spell in the torturous French military, Saint Laurent suffered a nervous breakdown and was dismissed by Dior in 1962. Out of the ashes rose the Age of Yves. With Pierre Bergé, his then-lover who became his lifelong business partner and friend, the designer founded Yves Saint Laurent YSL to encompass prêt-à-porter, or ready-to-wear. In 1966, they opened the first YSL Rive Gauche women’s boutique in Paris, followed soon thereafter by YSL Rive Gauche for men. Saint Laurent had given birth to a global brand.
His revolutionary Mondrian mini dress from 1965 is a core element of his fashion biography. It is a prime example of how Saint Laurent, an avid art lover and collector, looked to painters, from Goya to Picasso, Ingres to Matisse, for inspiration.
With its pure lines and hues, Mondrian’s ground-breaking 1935 color-block painting Composition C transmutes beautifully into a dress that is highly valued by collectors of contemporary fashion and widely copied commercially to this day. The design is the epitome of Saint Laurent’s aesthetic, requiring a meticulous hand-piecing of each color block so that, despite the body’s curves, the visual plane is as flat as a canvas when the garment is worn. Mondrian’s purity met its match in Saint Laurent.
“I am no longer concerned with sensation and innovation, but with the perfection of my style,” Saint Laurent said four years before retiring, in 2002. After a long period of ill health, he died at his home in Paris on June 1, 2008.

- French Art Deco Couture Ivory Wool and Silk Floral Flapper Coat, 1920sLocated in Boca Raton, FLThe Roaring Twenties was a period of seismic change in women’s fashion. French designers like Coco Chanel, Jean Patou and Jeanne Lanvin introduced revolutionary silhouettes that broke from the corseted ones of the past. The flapper coat was among these styles, and this one made in France during that time is an exquisite reminder of the beauty that was part of the historical shift. The jacket is tailored from gorgeous ivory wool, with a plain weave that takes on unbelievably rich texture when combined with thin and thick strands—including shiny silk ones that form stripes down its length. Along the cuffs and hem, the weave blooms into stylized Art Deco flowers in lovely shades of red, orange, pink, coral, light blue, green, brown and black. Skipped stitches at their centers make for a finely handcrafted peekaboo detail. Trimmed in faux sheepskin fur, this coat is meant to look cozy, with a wrap front that closes with a button most likely made of Bakelite. Wear it with similar pieces to channel the era or mix and match it with modern ones for a truly one-of-a-kind ensemble. Size estimate: XS/S Measurements: Shoulders: 15.5 inches Sleeves: 21 inches Bust: Up to 40 inches Waist: 28 inches (Please note the button can easily be moved over within up to 8 inches to make the coat larger by the waist and hips.) - Lanvin Alber Elbaz Resort 2012 Gold & Silver GownBy Lanvin ParisLocated in Boca Raton, FLMoroccan-born designer Alber Elbaz is remembered as much for his love of people as he is for his astounding talent and creative philosophy. Credited with revitalizing the French fashion house of Lanvin where he served as creative director for fourteen years, he preferred to think of himself as a storyteller, working with “intuition, instinct, and joy.” Widely beloved and admired, the soft-spoken Elbaz lamented in an interview for Vogue how technology was changing the face of fashion, with the emphasis shifting from how designs felt in person to how they appeared on a screen. Referring to himself as “just Alber” the designer explained that one of his intentions with fashion was “to elevate people, to make them dream." The beauty of his legacy lies not only in the remarkable garments he designed but also in the spirit of them, his work conveying a certain depth of feeling that often shines through the wearer, emphasizing his belief that “the real Haute Couture is when you work with a person.” As seen as look #6 on that season’s runway, this beautiful gown from his 2012 Lanvin Resort Collection speaks for itself. Done in metallic lame silk featuring artfully arranged patterns of silver, gold, and deep purple stripes, this billowy dress is glamorous and comfortable at once. The bodice is introduced with thin gold spaghetti straps and a straight neckline, creating a languid chic effect that continues throughout and is complemented by two concealed side pockets. The oversized, elastic-fitted waist flows into a magnificently draped, supermodel-length long skirt that cascades past the ankles and moves beautifully with the wearer. Size estimate: SML Size: 36 FR Measurements: Bust: 34 inches Waist: elastic stretches to 30 inches Hips: Full Length: 67 inches long This incredible gown exudes a seductive goddess glam chic that is further enhanced by its dramatic length, volume, and glimmering lame thread, giving the eye something new to appreciate at each angle. The beauty of this dress lies in its simplicity, the classic silhouette and open décolletage proving the perfect medium to deliver an unforgettable dress that can easily be worn to a museum gala or beach wedding...Category

- JW Anderson Silk Macrame Wood Beaded Fringe Dress Runway Spring 2019By J W AndersonLocated in Boca Raton, FLBritish designer JW Anderson is a trailblazer in the contemporary fashion market. With a vast array of unique collections and collaborations, Anderson’s aesthetic offers a much-needed reorientation of fashion by combining elements of timeless tailoring and artisanal handicraft. Following this vision for his Spring 2019 collection, this macramé dress is a perfect testament to design that is both simple and complex. The bodice of the dress is a combination of white and anthracite crepe de chine. The liquid fabric drapes beautifully over the shoulders creating a mock-shawl effect while the white and grey provide a sophisticated contrast. On one of the sleeves, the grey crepe is ruched while the other is split at the shoulder. This asymmetry provides additional interest to the very geometric lattice beading on the front of the bodice. The skirt is slightly pegged and is done from a neutral linen underlayer and a macramé overskirt that incorporates wooden beading in the mix of the knotting. The skirt finishes with a band of widely spaced fringe. The combination of raw edges, wood, and natural tones, paired with the modern silkiness of the grey crepe give this dress a refreshing and serene vibe. It can be worn for a casual day dress...Category
