In her work she tries to capture the qualities for which porcelain has been known since its discovery in China: whiteness, translucency, and resonance. She is attracted to the enameled and lustered surfaces of the Baroque, Renaissance and Rococo porcelain designs, as well as to elaborations on structural elements of these time periods. She is investigating surface decorations and embellished shapes in order to gain more knowledge for my own studio practice. Sherman is interested in incorporating and referencing historic drawings, motives, and patterns into her work. Studying the history of ceramics Sherman has been captivated by the relationship between East and West, and how they continue to influence each other, especially through the ceramic arts. Although there might be considerable differences between the two civilizations, the cultural exchange between them is an important connector of history and has produced a long and rich exchange of ideas between artists and makers. Asian craft traditions have been handed down to the West and the handmade aspect, even within the factory setting, is still an important concept that allows for control of design and quality by the artist, which is essential within craft of the West. Berrical Miguel (Villanueva de Algaidas, 1933 - Antequera, 2006) Berrical Miguel was a Spanish sculptor and artist also known as the puzzle sculptor, due to the particularity of his sculptures. In the first half of the twentieth century the young Berrocal sought his artistic journey by asking himself: "How to awaken the public thanks to a sculpture?". From this reflection comes his personal artistic philosophy and his plastic language that can be summarized in 7 key concepts: scientific inspiration, empty space, disassembly, interactive aesthetics, techniques, multiple. His work was unified by an underlying search for beauty, borne from his study of mathematics and physics early in life. Makes for fantastic wall-art. Daido Moriyama (Japanese, b.1938) is a prolific Japanese artist, well-known as a photographer, graphic designer, and writer. Moriyama was born in Ikeda City, Osaka, Japan. He studied photography at the Takeji Iwamiya studio in Osaka before moving to Tokyo in 1961 to meet the members of VIVO. Moriyama became an assistant to Eikoh Hosoe, and gained access to the Tokyo photo world through this position. In 1968, Moriyama produced a collection of photographs, Nippon gekijo shashincho, in high-contrast, in which he focused on the indigenous world or the few indigenous things that had not been corrupted by the rapidly industrializing world. Around the same time he produced this collection, he began to draw the attention of many young and aggressive artists, most of them photographers, by becoming involved in the group magazine Provoke. Other artists who also participated in this group magazine project include Koji Tagi, Yutaka Takanashi, Takuma Nakahira, and Takahiko Okada.
