Portraits of two sisters
Located in BELEYMAS, FR
Bernard GAILLOT (Versailles 1780 – Paris, 1847) Portraits of two sisters Pair of oil on canvas H. 92 cm; L. 73 cm One signed Student of David, he presented his first works at the Salon of 1810. Mainly known for his portraits of children, his work does not seem extremely vast. More than a dozen religious paintings are kept in large Parisian or provincial churches (Val de Grâce, Saint-Denis, Notre Dame des Victoires, Collégiale d'Eu, etc.), and a few paintings on historical subjects are kept at the Palace of Versailles, made during major orders from Louis-Philippe for the opening of the Versailles Museum. He also produced numerous humorous drawings, mainly in wash, some of which were engraved. Our two portraits of little girls most certainly represent sisters and had remained in the family until today. Unfortunately, time has made them lose their identity... One is shown sitting at the foot of a tree, in front of a kiosk with very beautiful neoclassical architecture. She holds in her arms a multitude of freshly picked flowers, which she holds awkwardly. His sister with her little red patent shoes...

Portrait of Jean-Baptiste Greuze, painted on linen by his daughter Anna Greuze
Located in PARIS, FR
This replica of the last self-portrait of Jean-Baptiste Greuze painted in 1804, executed by his daughter Anna at her father's side and recently rediscovered, provides us with a poignant image of the great artist, represented with panache despite the disillusions of life. 1. Jean-Baptiste Greuze Jean-Baptiste Greuze was the sixth child of a roofer from Tournus and retained a certain rusticity in his behaviour from his provincial childhood, beyond his taste for describing picturesque scenes of the countryside. He initially started training with a little-known painter from Lyon, Charles Grandon, before his genius was recognised in Paris where he became a full-time student of the Académie (of Painting) in 1755. He exhibited his work for the first time at the Salon during the summer of 1755, before leaving on a trip to Italy in the company of Louis Gougenot, abbot of Chezal-Benoît. Upon his return to Paris, Greuze became a prolific painter, participating widely in the Salons held between 1759 and 1765, to which he sent no less than 63 paintings: numerous genre scenes (The Marriage Contract, The Beloved Mother), but also portraits of his family circle, of courtiers and art lovers, or of his colleagues. The Academy closed the doors of the Salons to him in 1767 for not having produced his reception piece within six months of his reception, as was the tradition. He worked actively on this painting (Emperor Severus rebukes Caracalla, his son, for trying to assassinate him ) until the summer of 1769, tackling historical and mythological subjects for the first time. Once this was completed, he was then fully admitted to the Academy, but as a genre painter, and not as an historical painter, which had been one of the greatest humiliations of his life. Greuze then refused any participation in events organised by the Academy or its successor, the Academy of Fine Arts until 1800. Abandoning history painting, he gave a new twist to genre scenes, bringing them closer to history painting, as in this pair of canvases which constitutes some of his masterpieces: The Paternal Curse: The Ungrateful Son and The Paternal Curse: The Punished Son . Married in 1759 to Anne-Gabrielle Babuti, the daughter of a Parisian bookseller, his marriage was unhappy and his wife probably frequently unfaithful. The institution of divorce enabled him to record their separation in 1793, keeping his two daughters Anna-Geneviève, born in April 1762, and Louise-Gabrielle, born in May 1764, with him. Little is known about his daughter Anna except that she was herself a painter and lived with her father until his death. It is likely that most of the paintings she produced up to that date were attributed to her father, whose technique she shared to a great extent, making it extremely difficult to establish an autonomous corpus of her paintings. Greuze died in his studio at the Louvre on March 21st 1805. The attention paid to the expressivity of his characters and the emotional charge they convey enabled Jean-Baptiste Greuze to enjoy immense popularity with the eighteenth-century public, and they still constitute Greuze's true modernity. As the artist said, "I dipped my brush in my heart". Greuze was also an exceptional draughtsman and a portraitist of immense talent and exceptional longevity who painted both the Dauphin (the son of Louis XV and father to Louis XVI) and the young Napoleon Bonaparte. 2. Greuze's self-portraits Greuze was very much influenced by Dutch paintings during all his life. While the source of his inspiration for genre scenes can be found in Gerard Dou...

Portrait of a Young Gentleman and Pet Dog c.1680, Antique oil on Canvas Painting
Located in London, GB
The portrait genre was valued particularly highly in English society. Neither landscapes nor allegorical pictures were ever priced so highly at exhibitions and in the trade as depictions of people, from the highest aristocracy to scholars, writers, poets and statesmen. This charming portrait, presented by Titan Fine Art, of a fashionable young gentleman and his faithful pet is an excellent example of 17th century child portraiture in England. There is a remarkable beauty and sensitivity to the portrait. The face, particularly well rendered, has captured the character of this young man – both charming and at the same time mischievous. Only the playful attention of a small dog suggests anything less than patrician dignity. Symbolism was important in portraiture and it provided a pointed and aspirational narrative that would not have been lost on contemporary viewers. For example, the presence of the dog, which was likely the boy’s pet, is at once a charming pictorial device and also a clear allusion to fidelity, trust and loyalty. The hairstyle and the attire, notably the type of cravat with the blue ribbon, help to date this portrait to between 1670 to 1685. Until the late eighteenth century children were dressed as adults - boys were dressed like men in breeches, vests, and coats between four and seven years of age. The expensive lace is an indication to his family’s wealth. Held in a good quality and condition antique gilded frame. Born in Suffolk, Mary Beale, nee Cradock (1633-1699) was employed by many of the most distinguished persons of her time including nobility, landed gentry, and clergymen. Technically accomplished, her paintings are noteworthy for their honest and sympathetic portrayal. In 1651 she married Charles Beale...

Male and female portrait, both in silk kimono, possibly textile dealers
By Christoffel Lubieniecki
Located in Amsterdam, NL
CHRISTOFFEL LUBIENIECKI (1659-1729) Pair of portraits of a gentleman and a lady, both in silk kimono, before a country house (circa 1680) Indistinctly signed “C.......” on a box under the man’s left hand Oil on canvas, 79.5 x 67 cm each Both sitters are portrayed wearing a silk “Japanese” coat. During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki) Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits. The loving execution of these contented burghers, enjoying the garden vistas of their country house, places him alongside Amsterdam portraitists such as Constantijn Netscher and Michiel van Musscher...

19th Century Portrait Painting of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, 'The Black Mahler'
Located in London, GB
H D Turner (late 19th Century) Portrait study of Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, aged 7 (1875-1912) signed and dated 1882 Oil canvas 25 x 21 inches Samuel Coleridge-Taylor was born in 1872 at 15 Theobalds Road, Holborn, London, to an English mother, and a father who was a surgeon from Sierra Leone. the Coleridge part of the surname is believed to be added to Taylor after the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Eight years after its opening in 1882 Coleridge-Taylor won a scholarship to the Royal College of Music. Here shone and prospered moving from playing the violin to becoming a world class composer. Coleridge-Taylor was brought up by his mother in Croydon after his father disappeared back to Sierra Leone upon finishing his medical studies at King’s College, London. It is also known that a couple called Sarah and Benjamin Holman had something to do with his upbringing and bought him his first violin and violin lesson. At seven years old he sat as a model for the Croydon Arts Club where two portraits by different artists where painted. One these now resides in the National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG 5724). Coleridge-Taylor started using his musical talents from a young age, singing in the local choir at St George’s aged Ten. The Honorary Choirmaster Colonel Herbert A. Walters oversaw his early career and organised for Samuel to play violin at the Royal College of Music where he won a scholarship at fifteen. After graduating from playing violin he went on to study composition under the composer, Sir Charles Villiers Stanford - the composer and one of the great men behind the renaissance of English music in the late 19th Century. Coleridge-Taylor had elevated himself into the most influential musical sphere of the day, where he acquired patrons who could help develop his career. An editor at the Novello & Co called August Jaeger, had been tipped off about Coleridge- Taylor’s great talent and set about publishing the first of a series of Coleridge-Taylor’s anthems. This work with Novello's would span the rest of the composer’s life. The African-American poet and novelist Paul Laurence Dunbar (1872-1906) visited London in 1896. His meeting with Coleridge-Taylor sparked a series of collaborations between the two. Another American poet Henry Longfellow...

Portrait of John Bagwell M.P. (1751-1816) c.1800
By Sir Martin Archer Shee
Located in London, GB
It is no wonder why the artist of this grand scale half-length portrait was President of the Royal Academy and included the royal family as clients of his highly successful practice. The large scale and the bright red scarlet cloth against the moody sky create a strong visual sense of drama. The double breasted and brass buttoned coat with button back lapels, dark mustard facings and stand collar are worn over a white linen shirt and black neckcloth. This is a uniform of the British Army. The tasselled silver epaulettes at the shoulder denote rank. The portrait depicts Colonel Right Honourable Colonel John Bagwell M.P. (1751-1816) of Marlfield, co. Tipperary, Cork. In 1774 the sitter married Mary Hare and the couple had four sons and four daughters. He was Colonel of the Tipperary Militia, which he raised, in 1793 to 1805, when he resigned in favour of his eldest son, William Bagwell (c.1776-1826), who was at first Lieutenant Commander of the County Tipperary militia in 1794, and then its Commander from 1805 to his death in 1850. Like so many Anglo-Irish families, the Bagwells claimed descent from a captain in the Cromwellian army who settled in Ireland in the 1650s probably from the Devon-Somerset area, where the name Bagwell is historically most common. The Irish Bagwell family were bankers at Clonmel (Tipperary) and the sitter was brought up in this tradition. He set out to use the wealth generated by the family bank to buy influence and social status in an unusually direct way, so that his career - and to a lesser extent that of his sons - is a textbook illustration of the venality and patronage of 18th century politics. He bought an estate at Marlfield and build a remarkably grand new house there which proclaimed his wealth and claims to social consideration. His key step, however, was to invest in properties which brought a controlling interest in some of the small local boroughs, and then to ensure his own election and that of his two eldest sons to parliament in 1799. The Government was keen to push through the union of Britain and Ireland in that parliamentary session, and needed to achieve a majority in the Irish House...
