1969

About the Item

The Mock Turtle's Story is from Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland as interpreted by Salvador Dali and published by Maecenas ( a Random House imprint) 1969 and is from the portfolio of one signed etching in colors and 12 heliogravures with remarque, hors-texte, title page, and text. The frontis page etching is signed in pencil by the artist. The Mock Turtle's Story is in excellent condition. It is a limited Edition 764/2500 signed in the plate by Dali on Mandeure paper. Photogravure, also known as heliogravure, is a complex intaglio printing process that photographically transfers an image to a plate and then to the page. After the image has been transferred to the plate, it is then etched onto it before being printed onto paper. The results are of incredibly high-quality.photogravure in its mature form was not developed until the late 1870s by Czech painter Karel Klíč. He first included pigment paper in the process of photo technical transfer in 1879 and is regarded as the inventor of photogravure process. There are two steps to the process. Firstly, a copper plate is coated with a light-sensitive gelatine tissue which is then exposed to the light from a photographic image. The gelatine hardens where the light falls, and remains soft where light doesn’t. Following this step, the plate is etched down to different depths according to the hardness of the gelatine. The result of this is a highly defined intaglio plate that can reproduce in great detail the tones of the original photographic image. The printing plate is etched to a different depth according to the finest tonal values, which can be printed after removal of the remaining gelatine using the gravure printing process. Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí i Domènech, Marquis of Dalí de Púbol (11 May 1904 – 23 January 1989), was a Spanish surrealist artist of Catalan ethnicity born in Figueres, Catalonia, Spain. One of the most famous artists that has ever lived Dali was a prolific creator working in many mediums such as painting, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, writing , multi media , photography and film making to name a few. He had an eccentric personality and with his exceptional skill as a draftsman and his unusually imaginative view of the world Dali captured the attention of the public wherever his work was displayed. He created his own personal philosophy which he called paranoid critical a state in which one could simulate delusion while still maintaining one’s sanity which influenced the Surrealist movement. Dali’s world of tapping into the unconscious using symbolism filled with themes from religion, death, eroticism and decay has fascinated even those who were not frequent art lovers. Dali was a great showman and loved being adored by his public. But needless to say he had the talent to sustain his popularity even after his death.

Frequently labeled a surrealist she was never a member of that group or movement, preferring to stake her own claim on modernism with a vision that owes more to the farthest shores of her imagination than to any affiliation with art trends, schools or movements. The originality of her art as well as her intelligence, famous wit and charisma accorded her celebrity status in the Paris art world and beyond beginning in the late thirties. Often eclipsing and even compromising her standing as a major artist was the originality and impact of her personal style. Her panache and glamour, once they found a place in the collective imagination of the time, turned her into a much-publicized fashion and feminist icon. Always controversial, with as many detractors as admirers, she lived and painted consummately on her own terms. Born in Buenos Aires of mixed Spanish, Italian, Argentine and Slavic blood, Leonor was raised in Trieste by her single mother where she absorbed the multi-ethnic and mixed cultural heritage of that cosmopolitan center. The predominant themes in Leonor Fini’s art are sexual tensions, mysteries and games. One of her favored subjects is the interplay between the dominant female and the passive male, and in many of her most powerful works the female takes the form of the sphinx to which she felt a strong identification. Her genius for stage and screen design is evident in her numerous ground breaking theater decors...
