'Port of Saint-Malo', French Modern School
Located in London, GB
'Port of Saint-Malo', oil on canvas affixed to board, French Modern School (1984). Although the artist dated this painting '84, it depicts a nostalgic view of the port of Saint-Malo in Western France's, Brittany in 1884 judging by the clothing worn by the characters depicted. The crowd on the shoreline is watching a sailboat regatta starting just inside the port's breakwater. A rather rare sunny day in Brittany brought out the parasols of the sitting ladies on the edge of the old ramparts. The walled city...

Six O'Clock
Located in Los Angeles, CA
Six O-Clock, c. 1942, oil on canvas, 30 x 20 inches, signed and titled several times verso of frame and stretcher (perhaps by another hand), marked “Rehn” several times on frame (for the Frank K. M. Rehn Galleries in New York City, who represented Craig at the time); Exhibited: 1) 18th Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary American Oil Paintings from March 21 to May 2, 1943 at The Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. #87, original price $450 (per catalog) (exhibition label verso), 2) Craig’s one-man show at the Frank K. M. Rehn Galleries, New York City, from October 26 to November 14, 1942, #10 (original price listed as $350); and 3) Exhibition of thirty paintings sponsored by the Harrisburg Art Association at the State Museum of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg in March, 1944 (concerning this exhibit, Penelope Redd of The Evening News (Harrisburg, Pennsylvania) wrote: “Other paintings that have overtones of superrealism inherent in the subjects include Tom Craig’s California nocturne, ‘Six O’Clock,’ two figures moving through the twilight . . . .” March 6, 1944, p. 13); another label verso from The Museum of Art of Toledo (Ohio): original frame: Provenance includes George Stern Gallery, Los Angeles, CA About the Painting Long before Chris Burden’s iconic installation outside of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Urban Light, another artist, Tom Craig, made Southern California streetlights the subject of one of his early 1940s paintings. Consisting of dozens of recycled streetlights from the 1920s and 1930s forming a classical colonnade at the museum’s entrance, Burden’s Urban Light has become a symbol of Los Angeles. For Burden, the streetlights represent what constitutes an advanced society, something “safe after dark and beautiful to behold.” It seems that Craig is playing on the same theme in Six O-Clock. Although we see two hunched figures trudging along the sidewalk at the end of a long day, the real stars of this painting are the streetlights which brighten the twilight and silhouette another iconic symbol of Los Angeles, the palm trees in the distance. Mountains in the background and the distant view of a suburban neighborhood join the streetlights and palm trees as classic subject matter for a California Scene painting, but Craig gives us a twist by depicting the scene not as a sun-drenched natural expanse. Rather, Craig uses thin layers of oil paint, mimicking the watercolor technique for which he is most famous, to show us the twinkling beauty of manmade light and the safety it affords. Although Southern California is a land of natural wonders, the interventions of humanity are already everywhere in Los Angeles and as one critic noted, the resulting painting has an air of “superrealism.” About the Artist Thomas Theodore Craig was a well-known fixture in the Southern California art scene. He was born in Upland California. Craig graduated with a degree in botany from Pomona College and studied painting at Pamona and the Chouinard Art School with Stanton MacDonald-Wright and Barse Miller among others. He became close friends with fellow artist Milford Zornes...

Mid-Century Oil on Canvas. Harbour scene. Farewell to the Fishermen.
Located in Cotignac, FR
Mid 20th century oil on canvas of a crowded harbour scene, showing the local fisherman or sailors saying farewell to their families before going to sea. The painting is signed bottom right but the artist remains as yet unidentified. A colourful yet slightly brooding and dreamlike painting. The figures are faceless and the shapes loose and undefined reminiscent of the works by Balthus who in turn was influenced by LS Lowry and his scenes of industrial districts. The colours are deep and glowing and the shapes of the figures are rounded giving a sense of warmth and evoking the quality of light seen at either dawn or dusk. Balthasar Klossowski de Rola (February 29, 1908 – February 18, 2001), known as Balthus, was a Polish-French modern artist. He is known for his erotically charged images of pubescent girls, but also for the refined, dreamlike quality of his imagery. Lowry is famous for painting scenes of life in the industrial districts of North West England in the mid-20th century. He developed a distinctive style of painting and is best known for his urban landscapes peopled with human figures often referred to as "matchstick men".

Anatomy Lesson #63 (contemporary male torso study, framed)
By Robert Goldstrom
Located in Hudson, NY
Anatomy Study #63 Contemporary Nude Oil Painting of toned male with outstretched arms Painted by Robert Goldstrom in 2023, 10 x 8 inches, 11 x 9 inches framed in white wood frame Robert Goldstrom is best known for his Brooklyn landscape paintings, but he is similarly prolific with his anatomy studies. Goldstrom comes from a background in illustration, and these roots can be seen throughout his figure paintings. A hallmark of his style is the way Goldstrom uses softly blended colors and his purposeful use of shadows to accentuate the organic shape and form of the figure. In this specific piece, the face is obfuscated in shadow, forcing the eye to focus on the prominent deltoids and latissimus muscles, brought to the foreground. Goldstrom's painting style is subtly pointillist with peppered brushstrokes that reflect light off of the natural curvatures of the muscle. The background color of this canvas falls between a deep dusty rose or burnt sienna, which complements the figure's warm naked skin tone. About the artist: Robert Goldstrom lives and paints Upstate New York by way of Brooklyn, NY. After years of making a living as an illustrator, winning both Gold and Silver Medals from the Society of Illustrators, Robert turned more and more to creating personal work. Now a full-time artist, he usually works in series – The Anatomy Lesson...

Great Hanson, Rose Dawn (Oil of Brooklyn, NY Williamsburgh Savings Bank Tower)
By Robert Goldstrom
Located in Hudson, NY
Robert Goldstrom Great Hanson, Rose Dawn, 2019 Savings Bank Tower Skyline in Brooklyn, NY Cultural District Painted by Robert Goldstrom in 2019, 50" X 40, oil on linen black wood frame Robert Goldstrom, long time Brooklyn resident, is well known for his poignant and enchanting paintings of his beloved borough. This painting weaves the artist's impeccable skill with interesting and dynamic city views, convey in a pointillist style. The artist carefully observes scenic details and infuses it with a mood derived from soft, peppered brushwork and Hopper-esque lighting. In paintings like Methodist Afternoon, the artist uses color and fluctuating sunlight to create the illusion of density as a grid of buildings stack up against the horizon. Goldstrom’s views of Brooklyn, painted as studies or full-scale tableaux, are captured at various times of day to reveal shifts in color and perspective. Goldstrom’s studies of city skylines are painted at various times of day, offering slight shifts in perspective while chasing sunlight. His panoramic portals mimic the horizontal view of where skyscrapers and bridges meet cloud and sky as seen from the street or a top story window. The Williamsburg Bank Building - an iconic beacon for many Brooklynites and the artist’s own “Mt. Fuji”- can be spotted in many of his paintings. Artist Statement: "I have been painting the Williamsburg Savings Bank Building and its place in the Brooklyn landscape...
