John Galliano for Christian Dior
Known for introducing rich theatricality and memorable fashion spectacles to the runway, John Galliano has enjoyed a singular career. The audacious British designer has garnered universal acclaim for genre-breaking collections not only at his eponymous label but also for Christian Dior.
From his embroidered absinthe-green Oscars gown for actress Nicole Kidman to the iconic sleeveless newspaper-print dress that Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw made famous, Galliano’s intricate and multifaceted work is reliably collectible and newsworthy, drawing on history as often as it embodies a fresh and forward-looking sensibility, and over the years the designer has helped shape an ever-broadening new legion of enthusiasts for Parisian couture.
Born in Gibraltar but raised in South London by strict Roman Catholic working-class parents, Galliano attended the all-boys Church of England grammar school, where his flamboyance and interest in art attracted the attention of bullies. Eventually, Galliano ended up at the prestigious design and art school Central Saint Martins College (then called Saint Martin’s School of Art), where fellow British designers Stella McCartney and Alexander McQueen also trained.
Galliano flourished at Central Saint Martins. While a student, he worked in the costume department at the National Theatre in London. His graduate collection in 1984, dubbed “Les Incroyables” and named for post–French Revolution fashion lovers, was modeled by close friends of his and earned a standing ovation. The line ended up in the storefront windows of London luxury boutique Brown’s on South Molton Street, and Galliano’s first official collection — after he graduated — debuted at Paris Fashion Week in 1989.
In the early 1990s, Galliano’s relationship with his financial backer, Plein Sud’s Faycal Amor, ended, and by 1994, he was broke and sleeping on the floor of a friend’s apartment. Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour and then-Vanity Fair editor André Leon Talley stepped in and introduced the budding designer to Portuguese socialite and fashion patron São Schlumberger and others.
At Schlumberger’s Hôtel Particulier, Galliano’s shows became the stuff of fashion legend. His collection, a blend of Japanese modernist style as well as nostalgia for Art Deco and 1940s’ tailoring, earned raves in glossy magazines and garnered the attention of Princess Diana, Madonna and other fashion luminaries.
Once the Galliano name was well known among the world’s most stylish set, the chairperson of LVMH, Bernard Arnault, appointed Galliano head designer of French fashion house Givenchy. One year later, in 1996, LVMH moved him to the design team at Dior. In just eight weeks, Galliano produced 50 looks for Dior Haute Couture’s brilliant Spring/Summer 1997 Maasai collection and would ultimately design a mind-boggling eight collections a year for the storied French fashion house until 2011. Today, Galliano is the creative director of Maison Margiela.

- Vintage 1990s Nolan Miller Couture Ivory Embroidered Silk Strapless Mermaid GownBy Nolan MillerLocated in Beverly Hills, CAA breathtaking Nolan Miller Couture unworn with tags embroidered silk organza sculpted bridal gown dating back to the early 1990's. Nolan Miller was an acclaimed costume designer best known for his work on the long-running series Dynasty. Miller was nominated six times for an Emmy Award, winning 'Outstanding Costumes' in 1984 for the Dynasty series, which also set a fashion trend for glamorous high society gowns. This stunning Nolan Miller creation from his exclusive couture line is the perfect solo in the spotlight 'Barbie Doll' bridal look. This showstopper has serious allure with that hourglass mermaid silhouette. The fabric itself is a masterpiece; the highest quality large-scale ivory floral cutwork embroidered silk organza with a matching ivory silk underlay. I adore the fully corset boned satin trimmed sweetheart plunge strapless with adorable back-bow. A curved nipped waist with fitted mermaid slightly trained skirting creates the perfect amount of drama to this timeless garment. It is impeccably seamed and on the level of modern day haute couture. - Iconic 1996 Madonna 'Evita' Film-Worn Beaded Ivory Silk Couture Archival GownLocated in Beverly Hills, CAOwn a major slice of celebrity and film history. Madonna wore this extraordinary ivory beaded couture gown for her portrayal of Eva Perón in the unforgettable 1996 film "Evita". Madonna campaigned to play the role of Evita and used her popstar status to acquire it. Many other actresses were considered to play the role such as Elaine Paige, Liza Minnelli, Cher and Meryl Streep. The film was a huge success for Madonna, who up until this time had not fared well in her acting exploits. Madonna even won a Best Actress Golden Globe Award for her performance as the First Lady of Argentina. Madonna wears this gorgeous gown in the scenes at the Inaugural Ball as she dances and movingly sings the song, "High Flying, Adored." The fabric itself is a masterpiece; high quality silk satin that has been heavily adorned with hand set red jewels, pearls, rhinestones and glass beads. I love the chic cut-out neckline which rests on the collarbone and scoops low in the back. The gown flows into an hourglass nipped waist where it breaks into a unique zig-zag design. The piece work to create the skirting in particular is extraordinary. The yard and yards of luxurious silk satin personify the feminine ideal in clothing. We photographed the garment with and without a petticoat so you can see the true fullness. Not only was this gown an iconic look for the character but Madonna was also featured in the October 1996 issue of Vogue magazine wearing this gown. The gown was originally made for the actress Carol Lawrence and then worn by actress Daryl Hannah while accompanying John F. Kennedy, Jr. to meet the Queen of England. We were thrilled to find a picture of this meeting as well. With Madonna worn garments fetching extremely high prices at auction (her 'Desperately Seeking Susan...Category
