This gorgeous pair of blue and white English Delft plates was made in Bristol, England, circa 1760.
The lovely floral decoration is hand painted in shades of cobalt blue on a light cobalt blue ground.
One flower on the vine stretches rim to rim from the border on one side into the well of the dish and then across the well and onto the border again.
This is an exquisite design well painted!
REFERENCE: for a very similar English delftware plate, see English Delftware in the Bristol Collection, by Frank Briton, pg 191, plates 12.29 and 12.30, where Briton states that the origin of the dish was probably in one of the factories in Bristol, England circa 1760

There are two small chips to the plate's rim, wear and fritting to the entirety of the plate's rim and footrim, and some very light rubbing to the glaze in the bowl. Otherwise, there are some fine & light surface scratches and other signs of expected light wear consistent with age.

Hand-painted faience from Holland, such as this pair from the 1800’s, were typically painted in the traditional cobalt blue and white, however our plaques have vibrant colors that enhance two distinct scenes. Both plaques feature a roughly ovate shape molding and sinuous cutouts, typically seen in Dutch faience after the 17th century. The popularity of the blue-and-white porcelain developed in 14th-century China inspired delft and faience pottery in Europe. The global expansion of trade through the Dutch East India Company led to the import of numerous examples of Chinese porcelain, resulting in the creation of Dutch delftware, which is the term generally used to describe the tin-glazed earthenware that Dutch potters used. There were other imitations of Chinese porcelain produced by ceramicists throughout Europe, but delftware was the most successful. True blue delftware originates only from a single location: Delft in the Netherlands. These precious pieces pair well with French faience. Unlike delftware, French faience utilizes a lead-and-tin glaze. This earthenware has roots in late-16th-century France. French Provincial delft and faience tend to feature snow-white lacquered surfaces with colorful painted images or floral designs.
