This intriguing sterling silver cup features the shell of a coconut mounted into exquisite silver. A sublime example of elegant Georgian design, the cup features delicate scalloped edging as its singular motif. It is extraordinary to find such a beautiful example of this lost art, exhibiting a rare combination of classical beauty and exotic charm.
The use of rare and exotic materials such as the coconut became popular across Europe during the Middle Ages, when it was believed that these unique materials from distant lands possessed mystical powers. It was held that they could detect, and even deter, the effects of poison and as such were employed as drinking vessels, often mounted with ornate embellishments of silver. As more trade routes opened up during the 16th century, materials such as the coconut became more widely available, though still only afforded to the wealthy minority in Europe and England. And, while they eventually lost their appeal for their magical powers, coconuts proved an ideal material for cups and pots and retained their popularity as such. This exceptional pair of antique Victorian boxed silver fish servers, in sterling standard, consists of a serving knife and fork.
The blade of the knife and the drop of the fork have an incurved shaped form.
The anterior of the knife is embellished with a bright cut engraved band of leaf ornamentation paralleling the shaped side of the blade, accented with a suspended floral festoon and fabric swag designs.
The drop of the fork is ornamented with further bright cut engraved floral festoon designs extending from a wrigglework decorated border to the lower portion of the four tines.
The posterior surface of each shaped blade is plain and embellished with a paralleling scalloped border to the incurved edge.

Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other.
Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. This exceptional antique Victorian sterling silver claret jug has a circular rounded form onto a circular plateaued foot.
The upper portion of the jug is encompassed with bands of bright cut engraved evolute scroll, vertical pale and oval motifs accented with a simplified leaf garland and delicate scrolling pattern to the rim, all influenced by the Aesthetic Movement.
The lower portion of the body is embellished with large fan designs segmented with tri-lobed motifs; each large module incorporates a horizontal pale, matte pattern.
The Victorian silver claret jug is fitted with a hinged hallmarked cover ornamented with a bright cut engraved leaf wreath design encompassing a contemporary crest of a stag's head erased.
The cover is surmounted with a cast and applied leaf decorated thumbpiece, reflecting the shape of the fan designs to the body.
This impressive jug is fitted with an exceptional embossed elongated S scroll handle featuring a bi-lobed ribbed formation and embellished with bright cut engraved oval motifs to either side, in addition to a scalloped, scrolling lower terminal.
Either side of the lip is ornamented with a bright cut engraved simplified leaf design, in addition to a plain applied moulded border to the rim.
The plateaued foot is embellished with further bright cut engraved garland designs, reflecting the ornamentation of the body and cover.
The interior surface of the cover retains the original gilding.
The underside of the foot bears the retailer's mark 'J. Mayer, Silversmith, Liverpool'.
Condition
This antique Victorian silver claret jug is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional presentation condition. The bright cut engraved decoration is very crisp. The jug has been professionally cleaned and is ready for use. Full hallmarks struck to the underside of the base and part hallmarks to the cover are very clear.

The body of the dish is embellished with embossed fluted ornamentation accented with a central scroll and leaf decorated motif to the centre of the well.
The undulating rim of the dish is encompassed with embossed decoration in addition to pierced simplified foliate designs.
The pedestal is embellished with further embossed alternating fluted decoration with a plain rim.
The underside of the dish bears the registration number 'Rd 163770.'
Condition
This antique dish is a very good gauge of silver, fine quality and in excellent presentation condition. There are some fire marks to the well of the dish, in keeping with age. Full hallmarks struck to the surface of the rim are all very clear; the second portion of the maker's mark has wear but remains legible.
