Utilitarian African Tribal Bowl of Gala or Karo People from Southern Ethiopia

A beautiful dark, chocolate-colored wooden bowl made by the Gala or Karo people in Southern Ethiopia and carved out of a solid block of wood, it served as a utilitarian object in everyday tribal life (and was not made for commercial sale, which would detract from its value). Vintage Teak Burl Wood Bowl, Java, Mid-20th Century
Located in Point Richmond, CA
Vintage Teak Burl Wood bowl, Java, Mid-20th Century. 9-3/4" dia by 4-1/2" tall.
This lovely burl bowl was used to hold the betel nut and condiments for betel nut chewing, an essential form of social interaction throughout southeast Asia. Because sharing betel was such an important act of hospitality, the vessels and paraphernalia involved also became highly prestigious objects.
This beautifully figured bowl was such an object, and would have been treasured for the quality and density of its burl. It is hand made from a single piece of teak burl. Originally it would have had a metal liner, most probably of bronze or brass, and would have held a number of smaller metal vessels...

The other side depicts a tree with birds and (perhaps) dragons; and on the lid, a floral motif, and arrows. The top lifts off, revealing the interior compartment carved by hand out of the solid teak block...
