Carrara marble table lamp 2575 by Josef Frank, Svenskt tenn

About the Item

Table lamp model 2575 designed by Josef Frank. Produced by Svenskt Tenn and this piece ca 1950-60s. The lamp is commonly made from wood but this example made from carrara marble stone. New lamp shade in cotton. Very good vintage condition with light age related wear and patina. Josef Frank has made a deep impression on Swedish design history. Although he was 50 years old when he fled the rising antisemitism for Sweden and the company Svenskt tenn. the Austrian architect is counted as one of Sweden’s most important designers of all time. ON SWEDISH TENN, Josef Frank received both a unique stage and invaluable help from Estrid Ericson, who was an unusually artistic producer. He rewarded her by being extremely productive: there are over 3,000 sketches and 250 textile designs signed by Frank in Svenskt Tenn's archives. JOSEF FRANK (1885 – 1967) grew up in Vienna in an assimilated Jewish family and studied architecture at the Konstgewerbeschule. In the 1920s, he designed private home areas and large farm complexes in the housing shortage of Vienna, and in 1925 he started the interior design firm Haus & Garten together with architect colleagues Oskar Wlach and Walther Sobotka. JOSEF FRANK BELONGED to the foreground figures of early Viennese modernism, but already in the early 1920s began to question the programmatic features of emerging modernism. He did not appreciate the French architect Le Corbusier's ideas about the home as "a machine to live in". Puritan principles were nothing for Josef Frank, who, on the contrary, feared that standardized interiors would make people rectified and boring. JOSEF FRANK WAS ATTRACTED BY A FREER, more artistic style ideal and developed his own type of modernism where values such as comfort, cosiness and richness of color were at the center. He refused to limit himself and sourced models for his furniture and textiles across all borders, both in time and space. He saw tubular steel furniture as a threat to humanity. On the contrary, he wanted to include the colors and shapes of nature in his interiors so that you could breathe and feel freedom even in closed rooms. For the same reason, he preferred furniture that could be seen through. A chair would have an open back and a cabinet would stand on legs that were so high that you could make out the line between the floor and the wall. JOSEF FRANK WAS EMPLOYED at Svenskt Tenn in 1934 and already a few years later the duo Frank/Ericson had their international breakthrough. Svenskt Tenn's exhibition rooms at the World Exhibitions in Paris in 1937 and New York in 1939 were characterized, contrary to the ideals of the time, by bold contrasts, both in terms of materials, colors and patterns. They received a lot of attention and became, somewhat paradoxically, the very model for the concept of Swedish Modern.
