Masanori Umeda Getsuen Lily Red Easy Chair, circa 1990

About the Item

Easy chair model Getsuen ‘Lily’ designed by Masanori Umeda. Manufactured circa 1990. In original condition with minor wear consistent of age and use, preserving a beautiful patina. Original upholstery and missing back wheel. Material and color: Red Fabric Measurements: D 90 cm x W 100 cm x H 90 cm Masanori Umeda graduated from the Kuwasawa Design School in Tokyo in 1962. In 1967 he moved to Milan and worked in the studio of Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni. From 1970-1979 he was a consultant for Olivetti where he met Ettore Sottsass. In 1981 Umeda designed his most famous Memphis piece: the Tawaraya boxing ring, in which the founding members of Memphis group were photographed by Studio Azzurro. Umeda returned to Japan in 1986 and opened his U-MetaDesign Studio (now Umeda Design Studio Inc.) in Tokyo. He continues to design a lot of postmodern and poetically playful furniture. He participated in several international exhibitions and won the BraunPrize in 1968, and the Japan Commercial Space Design Award in 1984.

Rob Parry (born in The Hague, Netherlands, 1925) studied at the Royal Academy of Art, The Hague where his most important teachers were Cor Alons, Paul Schuitema and Gerrit Rietveld, whom Parry worked for. It was Rietveld’s firm that laid the foundation for Parry’s interest in exhibition design. In 1950, Rob Parry started his own firm. Emile Truijen was his design partner from 1954 to 1958. Together they developed a myriad of designs, including one of the icons of Dutch design: the double post box. Up until 1995, he designed interiors, furniture, stands, exhibitions, Jewellery, lettering and toys. In his designs, Rob Parry experimented with new materials and techniques.
