Antique Japanese Shirushi-Banten Fireman Jacket Edo Period
Located in Atlanta, GA
A Japanese Shirushi-Banten (Fireman's Coat) circa 19th century of Edo Period. The robe was made from a heavy cotton fiber and decorated with a dramatic dragon in the dark cloud scheme using Tsutsugaki, a free-hand resist dye method. A dragon with claws clenching pearls and red-orange fire motifs was artistically depicted slithering in and out of dark swirling clouds from the front to the back of the robe. The spatial composition was superb as well as the stylized motion. The indigo blue colored neck lapel bears scription indicating the location of where the robe belonged: the Kannon-Ji of Magino District (The Temple of Kannon; In Japan, the goddess of mercy Guanyin was known as Kannon). This temple is located in Higashine City of Yamagata Prefecture in Northern Japan. On the back, there is a large Kanji Character "Space" in the center, matching the first symbol of the location "Magino" in the front. It is likely that instead of a functional fire-fighting gear, the robe was used in festival parade by firemen, perhaps sponsored by the temple for the town event.
When fully extended as shown in photo 1 and 2, it measures 50" W x 37" H.
A beautiful and well-preserved sample of Japanese textile art.

Antique French Aubusson Verdure Tapestry, Landscape Scene Wall Hanging
Located in Dallas, TX
76928 Late 19th-Century Antique French Aubusson Verdure Tapestry, Landscape Scene Wall Hanging. This hand-woven silk and wool late 19th-century antique French Aubusson verdure tapestry depicts a landscape scene of the French countryside. Displaying dense foliage, greenery, fauna and flowers, this verdure tapestry portrays a tranquil setting. The floral scroll and bird border seamlessly blends into the pictorial scene without taking away from the majestic style. An outer border composed of a zigzag chevron add interest and a pop of color. Rendered in variegated shades of brown, ecru, taupe, pale green, slate blue, red, pink, lavender, beige and charcoal. The hues of brown range from chocolate brown to lighter shades of brown reflecting a fallow color to sand. Other colors range from ecru (greyish-pale yellow or a light greyish-yellowish brown) to old gold (yellow color that varies from light olive or olive brown) and hues of olive and sage green. With its commitment to tradition and heart full of whimsy, this antique Aubusson wall hanging...

Large Early 19th Century Painted and Silkwork Picture 'The Good Samaritan'
Located in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire
The picture retains its original gilt frame. The image is rendered in a mixture of silkwork and hand painted decoration and depicts the injured traveler on the roadside being aided by the Samaritan while the Levite and the Priest are seen in the distance. This parable is told by Jesus in the Gospel of Luke.
A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving him half dead. By chance a certain priest was going down that way. When he saw him, he passed by on the other side. In the same way a Levite also, when he came to the place, and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he travelled, came where he was. When he saw him, he was moved with compassion, came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. He set him on his own animal, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the host, and said to him, 'Take care of him. Whatever you spend beyond that, I will repay you when I return.' Now which of these three do you think seemed to be a neighbor to him who fell among the robbers?"
This work is vastly bigger than 19th century silkwork pictures...
