Fulk’s interiors are always driven by narrative, which usually translates into rooms that summon visions of more romantic eras and a certain bygone sumptuousness achieved through saturated palettes and layered detail.

If Ken Fulk had a spirit animal, it might be the cheetah: lithe, speedy and nobody’s fool. He decorates instinctively and often with animal grace, as in this high-style lounge area, divided into two distinct areas, in a Sonoma Valley family compound. “I love the primitive elegance of the circa 1950 walnut Olavi Hanninen chairs around the geometric game tables,” says the Bay Area designer. Pattern and texture are layered with care, but the true embodiment of Fulkiness is the vintage Bruno Mathsson Pernilla lounge chair and ottoman, a 1stDibs find re-covered in supple black leather — sleek, muscular elegance.
