Raymond Pettibon est né à Tucson, en Arizona, en 1957, mais a passé son enfance à Hermosa Beach, en Californie. Après avoir obtenu un diplôme d'économie à l'université de Californie à Los Angeles ( ), M. Pettibon a reçu une licence en beaux-arts en 1977. Sa carrière artistique a commencé à prendre de l'ampleur au début des années 1980. À cette époque, il réalise des pochettes d'album et des affiches pour de nombreux groupes de punk rock tels que Black Flag et Sonic Youth.
La plupart des gravures , des peintures et des œuvres mixtes de Pettibon intègrent des textes et des images durs et équivoques. Si certains textes sont empruntés, d'autres sont des mots originaux de Pettibon. Son style reprend celui des bandes dessinées et inclut des motifs issus de la culture des jeunes, de la politique, du sport et des célébrités. Alors que ses premières œuvres étaient réalisées en noir et blanc, souvent à l'encre de Chine, plus tard dans sa carrière, Pettibon a commencé à incorporer la couleur en utilisant la peinture, le collage, l'aquarelle, la gouache et le crayon. Il est connu pour ses plaisanteries et sa description crue de la culture des jeunes et de la scène punk.
Les œuvres les plus récentes de Pettibon critiquent des controverses contemporaines telles que la guerre d'Irak et la politique américaine. Pettibon vit et travaille actuellement à New York.
