Clock work, 2021, by Jonathan Winbush

For his day job, Los Angeles–based artist Jonathan Winbush works in 3D motion graphics and virtual reality for television, film and video games. His award-winning work has been featured in numerous media outlets, such as Warner Bros., Netflix and Fox, and due to his extensive commercial experience, the video graphics he creates have a sensational quality to them. The dynamic settings and quick editing stimulate the eye and the senses.

For “Aesthetically Sound,” the latest NFT exhibition on 1stDibs, Winbush expands on the theme of sound and image by producing three animations that present a visual interpretation of the thematic relationship. His video series depicts containers of liquid splashing rhythmically to music. Each visually represents an element of sound: beat, rhythm and time. The musical score, composed by the artist, relies on moving images to enhance these elements and emphasize the effortless intersection of sounds and visuals.

For the 1stDibs audience, Winbush has also compiled a playlist of songs while working on his NFTs. He found inspiration in lo-fi, mellow sounds, and like the music featured in the works for the exhibition, these songs have no lyrics. The combination of the down-tempo beats and serene graphics illustrates the close relationship that sound and image have as profound sources of creative expression. Although the tone of the songs remain the same, they range in genre from chiptune to electronic. One song even plays on the classic video game Sonic the Hedgehog!
