Samuel Alken junior was the eldest son of Sporting artist Samuel Alken (1756-1815), he was born on April 10th. The family mostly became sporting artists, his younger brothers Henry Thomas (Ben Tally Ho), George and Sefferien.
Little is known about his life, in his father's will he was the only son mentioned, but this was to leave him 1s., which presumably was a derogatory legacy perhaps because, as Shaw Sparrow suggests, he traded on his father's name, signing in the same manner. However, as he often signed quite clearly S. Alken Jnr one feels it unlikely, but it does imply S. Alken Snr also painted sporting pictures.
There has always been great confusion over the Samuel Alkens and for a long time they were looked upon as one person. number of prints were published after Samuel Junior's work including a set of sixteen published in the early 1820's depicting various sports, including hunting, racing, shooting and fishing. There were several thousand people at the circus on July 6, 1944 for the mid-day show. As excited spectators were watching the Flying Wallenda's start their high wire act, a fire started on the sidewall of the enormous big top and spread quickly ovet the canvas, which was waterproofed with gasoline and parafin. As the fire burned over the crowd, a panic driven stampede caused many people to become tangled in the bleachers and animal cages in the ring, trapping them inside the tent as it became completely engulfed and burned to the ground in less than 10 minutes. This piece is framed in a wooden frame measuring 36 x 50.5 inches.

Artist Jeff Fleming describes his painting style as kinetic impressionism. In this piece, a beagle triumphantly retrieves a stick thrown into the ocean. Jeff started the piece with a pencil sketch on the canvas, then with gloved hands, he applied oil paint using his fingers. Details were later added using brushes. Once these layers of paint dried, he moved the piece to his studio floor. "At this point, I whisked paint in random but authoritative strokes - a speckling technique which replicates water splashing."
About the Artist
Artist Jeff Fleming uses fingerpainting to create exuberant portraits of dogs. Growing up in Southern California, Jeff was first introduced to fingerpainting in kindergarten. He painted through high school and college and won several art awards, including Best of Show in a city wide student competition. After graduating with a degree in journalism and advertising, he went to work as an art director. For the next 40 years, he created print, radio and television ads for a number of top agencies. "After retiring in 2019, the clouds of stress and pressure cleared and allowed me to set my creative energy free," says Jeff. He began developing new techniques focused on the excitement and energy of painting. Today, he uses a variety of methods and tools, including fingerpainting wearing nitrile gloves, traditional paint brushes, bamboo shish kebab sticks, kite string, spraypaint and splattering. While working, Jeff always listens to music, including Broadway musicals, dance music and rhythmic Hawaiian tunes.
