Expressionist Animal Paintings

EXPRESSIONIST STYLE

While “expressionist” is used to describe any art that avoids naturalism and instead employs a bold use of flattened forms and intense brushwork, Expressionist art formally describes early-20th-century work from Europe that drew on Symbolism and confronted issues such as urbanization and capitalism. Expressionist artists experimented in paintings and prints with skewed perspectives, abstraction and unconventional, bright colors to portray how isolating and anxious the world felt rather than how it appeared.

Between 1905 and 1920, Austrian and German artists, in particular, were inspired by Postimpressionists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh in their efforts to strive for a new authenticity in their work. In its geometric patterns and decorative details, Expressionist art was also marked by eclectic sources like German and Russian folk art as well as tribal art from Africa and Oceania, which the movement’s practitioners witnessed at museums and world’s fairs.

Groups of artists came together to share and promote the themes now associated with Expressionism, such as Die Brücke (The Bridge) in Dresden, which included Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and investigated alienation and the dissolution of society in vivid color. In Munich, Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group led by Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, instilled Expressionism with a search for spiritual truths. In his iconic painting The Scream, prolific Norwegian painter Edvard Munch conveyed emotional turmoil through his depiction of environmental elements, such as the threatening sky.

Expressionism shifted around the outbreak of World War I, with artists using more elements of the grotesque in reaction to the escalation of unrest and violence. Printmaking was especially popular, as it allowed artists to widely disseminate works that grappled with social and political issues amid this time of upheaval. Although the art movement ended with the rise of Nazi Germany, where Expressionist creators were labeled “degenerate,” the radical ideas of these artists would influence Neo-Expressionism that emerged in the late 1970s with painters like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Francesco Clemente.

Higher Life Acrylic Painting on Canvas, Expressionist, Unframed

By Bright Toh

Located in Ibadan, Oyo

Bright Toh's creative vision is driven by a deep-rooted appreciation for his African heritage and a desire to pay homage to the intrinsic ties between the people of Africa and their natural surroundings. "Higher Life" stands as a testament to the exquisite synergy that exists between man and wildlife, shedding light on the harmonious relationship they share within their common ecosystem. The central figure in the artwork, a man adorned with the head of a bird, serves as a powerful representation of the mystical connection between humans and nature. The bird, with its freedom to soar through the skies, symbolizes the aspirations of the African people to rise above challenges and embrace a higher state of being. This metamorphosis of man into a bird-like form underscores the spiritual journey of self-discovery and cultural understanding that lies at the heart of African traditions. Toh's meticulous attention to detail and masterful use of colors breathe life into the canvas. The vibrant hues mimic the rich landscapes of Africa, from the lush greenery of the savannahs to the striking plumage of its avian inhabitants. Through a harmonious blend of traditional and contemporary artistic techniques, Toh weaves together a tapestry that celebrates the convergence of African heritage and its intertwined relationship with wildlife. The concept of totems holds immense significance in various African cultures, where ancestral reverence is deeply ingrained. In "Higher Life," the man's bird head serves as a totemic representation of his connection to his ancestors, carrying with it the wisdom and experiences of those who came before him. The totem acts as a guiding force, leading the man on a journey of self-discovery and connection to his roots. As viewers immerse themselves in "Higher Life," they are invited to contemplate the timeless relationship between man and nature. Toh's artwork urges us to recognize the importance of preserving our shared environment and the imperative role of cultural heritage in shaping our identities. In a world marked by rapid urbanization and detachment from nature, "Higher Life" serves as a poignant reminder of the intrinsic bond between humanity and the animal kingdom. Bright Toh's artistic prowess in "Higher Life" transcends cultural boundaries, beckoning audiences from all corners of the globe to appreciate the profound unity between humans and wildlife. It is a testament to the enduring legacy of African traditions and an encouragement to embrace our roots as an essential part of who we are. In conclusion, "Higher Life" is not just a stunning work of art; it is an exploration of our place in the world and the intricate ties that bind us with our environment and cultural heritage. Through the captivating portrayal of a man with a bird...

Psychological Portrait of Girl with Dog Spanish Figurative Oil Canvas Painting

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Psychological Portrait of Girl with Dog Spanish Figurative Oil Painting 1974 Artist: José Antonio Castro Cadenas Title: Girl with Dog Date: 1974 Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 73 × 54 cm (28.7 × 21.3 in) Signature: Signed and dated lower left Frame: Unframed Condition: Very good overall condition. Stable support and paint layer. Description A refined psychological portrait depicting a young girl holding her small companion dog, painted in 1974 by Spanish figurative artist José Antonio Castro Cadenas. The composition is structured around the direct, introspective gaze of the sitter, creating an immediate emotional dialogue with the viewer. The dog’s slightly diverted attention introduces a subtle narrative counterpoint, adding tension and quiet movement within the otherwise serene arrangement. Executed in a restrained palette of muted pinks, greys and softened whites, the painting conveys the lyrical atmosphere characteristic of Spanish figurative portraiture of the 1970s. The artist’s controlled modelling of the face and hands reveals strong academic training combined with a poetic sensitivity typical of mature postwar Spanish realism. Portraits of children accompanied by animals hold a special place within European figurative painting and remain particularly sought after by collectors interested in narrative intimacy and psychological presence. A compelling and elegant example of Spanish figurative painting from the second half of the twentieth century. Biography José Antonio Castro Cadenas (Córdoba, 1926–2006) was a Spanish figurative painter known for the tonal refinement and psychological sensitivity of his portraits and figure compositions. He developed most of his artistic career in Córdoba and exhibited on several occasions at Galería Studio–Juan Bernier, an important venue for the promotion of twentieth-century Andalusian art. His work includes portraits, female figures, hunting scenes, equestrian compositions and landscapes distinguished by solid draftsmanship and harmonious chromatic balance. Today his production forms part of the tradition of Spanish figurative painting that preserved narrative and emotional realism throughout the second half of the twentieth century. The painting resonates with the introspective atmosphere found in the work of Antonio López García, as well as the poetic figurative tradition associated with Julio Romero de Torres and the broader lineage of Spanish psychological portraiture. Its quiet stillness and emotional restraint also echo the intimate portrait sensibility seen in twentieth-century European figurative painters working between realism and lyrical modernity. This positioning situates the work within the continuity of postwar Spanish figurative painting that remained committed to atmosphere, silence and psychological depth rather than abstraction. Cape Maneuver: Expressionist Bullfighter Oil Painting, 1980s

By Jose Maria Tuser Vazquez

Located in Sitges, Barcelona

Title: Cape Maneuver Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (Barcelona, 1919 – 1986) Technique: Oil on canvas mounted on board Dimensions: 19.7 x 23.6 in (50 x 60 cm) Date: Circa 1980s Signature: Signed "Tuser" in the lower left corner Condition: Excellent; thick, vibrant brushwork and vivid colors well preserved. 📝 Description This painting captures a dramatic moment in the bullfight — the classic verónica — as the matador gracefully halts the bull’s charge with a sweeping motion of the cape. The vivid contrast of magentas, blues, and golds intensifies the theatrical tension between man and beast. The composition is dynamic yet controlled, emphasizing the poise of the torero against the raw force of the bull. The expressive brushstrokes and thick impasto enhance the sense of movement, while the abstracted background ensures focus remains on the central figures. The piece is a striking blend of figuration and emotional energy, characteristic of Tuser’s taurine works. 👤 About the Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez José María Tuser Vázquez was a Spanish painter born in Barcelona in 1919. He studied at the Barcelona School of Arts and Crafts and began exhibiting in the 1940s. By 1947, he had fully devoted his career to bullfighting scenes, developing a distinctive figurative expressionist style with impressionist influences. He collaborated with the magazine El Ruedo, creating numerous illustrations and covers, and designed collectible postcards for Editorial Artigas. His work became well-known in Spanish artistic circles and is now part of both private and institutional collections, including the Club Taurino of London. His paintings have been auctioned internationally, reaching up to $3,000 depending on size and subject. His legacy is that of a painter who masterfully captured the emotion, tradition, and drama of the Spanish corrida. 🎨 Similar Artists José María Tuser Vázquez’s work shares thematic and stylistic elements with: Roberto Domingo – A pioneer of bullfighting art...
