Maxwell Mustardo

Maxwell Mustardo is a ceramic artist whose highly textured forms are the result of meticulous research into the chemistry of kiln firing. He includes materials such as glass, metals, and plastic in the glazing and post-firing process, resulting in deconstructed vessels with unique surfaces, such as crystallized metallics or lush neon moss. Maxwell has earned multiple awards for his work including an Award of Excellence from the James Renwick Alliance, an ARGUS grant for materials research, a Levine Endowment grant to study material culture in Japan & South Korea, and as the SUNY-wide finalist in the visual arts category for the Thayer Fellowship in the Arts as an undergraduate student. He has been a resident artist at the Takaezu Studio, the Mendocino Art Center, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, the Sonoma Community Center, the New Harmony Clay Project, & the C.R.E.T.A. Rome International Center.

Used to refer to a time rather than an aesthetic, Contemporary art generally describes pieces created after 1970 or being made by living artists anywhere in the world. This immediacy means it encompasses art responding to the present moment through diverse subjects, media and themes. As a pioneer in naturalistic forms and figures that vividly express emotion, Auguste Rodin is often called the father of modern sculpture. His work in the 19th and early 20th century broke with artistic conventions and inspired modernism, leading to a new period of avant-garde abstraction.
