Finding the Right chandeliers-pendant-lights for You

Chandeliers — simple in form, inspired by candelabras and originally made of wood or iron — first made an appearance in early churches. For those wealthy enough to afford them for their homes in the medieval period, a chandelier's suspended lights likely exuded imminent danger, as lit candles served as the light source for fixtures of the era. Things have thankfully changed since then, and antique and vintage chandeliers and pendant lights are popular in many interiors today.

While gas lighting during the late 18th century represented an upgrade for chandeliers — and gas lamps would long inspire Danish architect and pioneering modernist lighting designer Poul Henningsen — it would eventually be replaced with the familiar electric lighting of today.

The key difference between a pendant light and a chandelier is that a pendant incorporates only a single bulb into its design. Don’t mistake this for simplicity, however. An Art Deco–styled homage to Sputnik from Murano glass artisans Giovanni Dalla Fina (note: there is more than one lighting fixture that shares its name with the iconic mid-century-era satellite — see Gino Sarfatti’s design too), with handcrafted decorative elements supported by a chrome frame, is just one stunning example of the elaborate engineering that can be incorporated into every component of a chandelier.

Chandeliers have evolved over time, but their classic elegance has remained unchanged. Not only will the right chandelier prove impressive in a given room, but it can also offer a certain sense of practicality. These fixtures can easily illuminate an entire space, while their elevated position prevents them from creating glare or straining one’s eyes. Certain materials, like glass, can complement naturally lit settings without stealing the show. Brass, on the other hand, can introduce an alluring, warm glow. While LEDs have earned a bad reputation for their perceived harsh bluish lights and a loss of brightness over their life span, the right design choices can help harness their lighting potential and create the perfect mood. A careful approach to lighting can transform your room into a peaceful and cozy nook, ideal for napping, reading or working.

For midsize spaces, a wall light or sconce can pull the room together and get the lighting job done. Perforated steel rings underneath five bands of handspun aluminum support a rich diffusion of light within Alvar Aalto's Beehive pendant light, but if you’re looking to brighten a more modest room, perhaps a minimalist solution is what you’re after. The mid-century modern furniture designer Charlotte Perriand devised her CP-1 wall lamps in the 1960s, in which a repositioning of sheet-metal plates can redirect light as needed.

The versatility and variability of these lighting staples mean that, when it comes to finding something like the perfect chandelier, you’ll never be left hanging. From the whimsical — like the work of Beau & Bien’s Sylvie Maréchal, frequently inspired by her dreams — to the classic beauty of Paul Ferrante's fixtures, there is a style for every room. With designs for pendant lights and chandeliers across eras, colors and materials, you’ll never run out of options to explore on 1stDibs.

Questions About Pendant By Arredoluce
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A charm pendant is an ornament that is usually smaller than a pendant. It is strung on a chain or ribbon to hang from the neck. Charm pendants are made from metals with intricate designs and shapes. On 1stDibs, you can find a variety of charm pendants from different periods and creators to choose from.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
A pendant bail is the part of the necklace, often placed in the center, which is where the pendant hangs. They are a great pendant connection to highlight the pendant in contrast with the necklace.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A pendant necklace is a type of jewelry worn around the neck that features a small ornament called a pendant. The term refers to both the chain or cord and the pendant itself. In some cases, pendant necklaces include both pieces. Other times, you buy the necklace or chain and pendant separately. On 1stDibs, find a large selection of pendant necklaces.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
You’ll often see chandeliers with elaborate glass ornamentation serving as a decoration. Quite frequently these glass pendants that hang from the light are called a prism. These pieces add luxe glamour to the light fixture, while also catching illumination and scattering it. Shop iconic vintage and contemporary chandeliers from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
A journey pendant is a piece of diamond jewelry that represents the ups and downs of life. The diamond's hardness and durability represent a person who has gone on a journey and has grown strong.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A ceiling pendant is a lone light fixture that hangs from the ceiling. It is usually suspended with the help of a chain, metal rod or cord. They can be used in various areas of the home, such as in a kitchen or in a bathroom. Find a variety of antique and vintage ceiling pendants on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 8, 2023
Yes, men should wear pendants if they wish to wear them. There are no rules regarding what types of jewelry men can wear. Historically and across cultures, both men and women have worn pendants. A man can wear any pendant necklace that is meaningful or appealing to him. On 1stDibs, shop a large selection of pendants from some of the world's top dealers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
What an anchor pendant means is largely a matter of personal interpretation. Many people associate anchors with ships and sailing. Alternatively, some people believe they represent steadfastness or stability because an anchor keeps a boat from drifting. On 1stDibs, find a variety of anchor pendants.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
The difference between an amulet and a pendant is that amulets are considered good luck charms that are imbued with positive energy, whereas a pendant is merely a fashionable piece of jewelry that can be styled with a chain.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
A swag pendant light is a fixture that hangs from the ceiling and provides an often inexpensive light source while taking up very little space. Swag pendant lights take up little space — the fixture is typically a bare or shaded socket that is suspended from the ceiling by way of a robust metal chain or cord. A swag pendant also offers a variety of installation options and can enhance the overall look of the room. Shop a range of antique and vintage swag pendant lighting on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 12, 2021
Mini pendant lights are scaled-down versions of pendant lights that dangle from an overhead support. Unique mini-pendant lights are a wonderful way to set the ambiance for an entire space because they dangle in mid-air. On 1stDibs, shop vintage and antique pendant lights.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A heart pendant symbolizes longing and connection. It represents the bond that two people share, especially in a relationship where distance has come between them. Shop a collection of heart pendants from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 13, 2023
The main difference between a locket and a pendant is design. A locket has a hinged cover that allows you to place a picture inside, while a pendant lacks this feature. Shop a collection of pendants and lockets from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
While there is no official difference between charms and pendants, charms are generally considered smaller and more dainty than pendants. Charms are usually placed on bracelets, whereas pendants are generally worn on necklaces. Shop a wide selection of charms and pendants on 1stDibs.
