Finding the Right Seating for You

With entire areas of our homes reserved for “sitting rooms,” the value of quality antique and vintage seating cannot be overstated.

Fortunately, the design of side chairs, armchairs and other lounge furniture — since what were, quite literally, the early perches of our ancestors — has evolved considerably.

Among the earliest standard seating furniture were stools. Egyptian stools, for example, designed for one person with no seat back, were x-shaped and typically folded to be tucked away. These rudimentary chairs informed the design of Greek and Roman stools, all of which were a long way from Sori Yanagi's Butterfly stool or Alvar Aalto's Stool 60. In the 18th century and earlier, seats with backs and armrests were largely reserved for high nobility.

The seating of today is more inclusive but the style and placement of chairs can still make a statement. Antique desk chairs and armchairs designed in the style of Louis XV, which eventually included painted furniture and were often made of rare woods, feature prominently curved legs as well as Chinese themes and varied ornaments. Much like the thrones of fairy tales and the regency, elegant lounges crafted in the Louis XV style convey wealth and prestige. In the kitchen, the dining chair placed at the head of the table is typically reserved for the head of the household or a revered guest.

Of course, with luxurious vintage or antique furnishings, every chair can seem like the best seat in the house. Whether your preference is stretching out on a plush sofa, such as the Serpentine, designed by Vladimir Kagan, or cozying up in a vintage wingback chair, there is likely to be a comfy classic or contemporary gem for you on 1stDibs.

With respect to the latest obsessions in design, cane seating has been cropping up everywhere, from sleek armchairs to lounge chairs, while bouclé fabric, a staple of modern furniture design, can be seen in mid-century modern, Scandinavian modern and Hollywood Regency furniture styles.

Admirers of the sophisticated craftsmanship and dark woods frequently associated with mid-century modern seating can find timeless furnishings in our expansive collection of lounge chairs, dining chairs and other items — whether they’re vintage editions or alluring official reproductions of iconic designs from the likes of Hans Wegner or from Charles and Ray Eames. Shop our inventory of Egg chairs, designed in 1958 by Arne Jacobsen, the Florence Knoll lounge chair and more.

No matter your style, the collection of unique chairs, sofas and other seating on 1stDibs is surely worthy of a standing ovation.

Questions About Sofa Daybed By
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 16, 2019

Yes, Daybeds are all twin size.

  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
No, daybeds are not smaller than twin beds. In fact, daybeds and twin beds are one in the same. Both measure 39 inches wide by 75 inches long.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Because daybeds use normal mattresses, they are almost a type of normal bed taking on the function of a couch. Therefore they can be used as a normal bed, though the comfort level depends on the mattress quality. Designer George Nelson's iconic Nelson daybed and others are available on 1stDibs.

A Corbusier sofa is a sofa designed by Swiss-born Charles-Édouard Jeanneret, best known by his adopted name Le Corbusier. He was a highly influential architect, designer, painter, urban planner and writer whose career spanned almost five decades. With the help of Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier created a number of designs for seating, including the famous LC2 and LC3. Each couples a tubular chrome frame with soft, supple leather upholstery, lending an organic warmth to an industrially made design and is engineered using ergonomic principles to complement the contours of the human form. Find a variety of vintage Le Corbusier sofas on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 21, 2024

The sofas that are the most durable are those made of premium materials using techniques that maximize sturdiness and strength. Some long-lasting upholstery options include full- and top-grain leather and tight-weave fabrics. Durable sofas often feature kiln-dried hardwood frames, hand-tied suspension systems and high-resilience foam padding. Shop a diverse assortment of sofas on 1stDibs.

A Knoll sofa, or a Knole sofa, is an interesting piece of furniture that’s believed to have its origins in the 1600s and to be the precursor to the modern sofa. It features two side-by-side cushions and arms that are as high as the back of the sofa. A sofa and loveseat are two different pieces of seating furniture. The size is the most significant distinction between a loveseat and a sofa. Sofas are bigger and available in a variety of lengths, though the conventional three-cushion seat is one of the most popular. Loveseats, on the other hand, are significantly smaller and often only seat two persons. The second significant comparison between the two is the function of the seat. Sofas are bigger and hence more suited to lounging and socializing. You may sprawl out on a sofa or gather a group of friends to speak or watch a movie. Loveseats are more useful in small spaces where a larger sofa would be too large. Find a collection of antique and vintage loveseats as well as sofas today on 1stDibs.

The sturdiest sofa is largely a matter of personal opinion. Generally, the materials of the frame greatly impact the sturdiness of a sofa. Kiln-dried hardwoods are often more durable than softer woods and engineered wood materials. Pieces featuring dowel construction, corner blocks and metal-bracketed joints are usually stronger than ones assembled with staples, nails and glue. On 1stDibs, shop a large collection of vintage and antique sofas.
