17th Century Still Life Painting Oil on Canvas Area of Ruoppolo
By Giovan Battista Ruoppolo
Located in Milan, IT
Area of ??Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo (Naples, 1629 - 1697) Still life with fruit and little bird Measures: Oil on canvas, 62 x 83 cm The still life in question shows juicy citrus fruits, among which we can recognize oranges and cedars, together with red berries scattered on the ground. A cheerful little bird rests on the edge of a terracotta pot in which some pink-mottled carnations grow. The landscape that can be observed all around is veiled by clouds and shaded by shrubs, while in the distance there is a green hill. Dominating the foreground and standing out from the dark background is the fruit which, lush and juicy, stands out in the vivacity of the colors in contrast with the dark background. The full-bodied brushstroke that delineates the wrinkled peel of citrus fruits to restore the realism of the fruit, just as the green leaves of the stems softly folded on themselves are sketched with extreme truthfulness, they ascribe the work to a painter working in the circle of Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo. Ruoppolo is a Neapolitan artist, specialized in the genre of still life, indeed De Dominici himself in his Lives of Neapolitan painters, sculptors and architects recognizes him a primary role in the Neapolitan school of the genre. He studied, together with Giuseppe Recco (1634 -?), In the workshop of Paolo Porpora (1617 - 1673). He painted almost exclusively fruit and flower paintings...

16th Century Adoration of The Shepherds Painting Oil on Copper
Located in Milan, IT
Attr. to Girolamo Siciolante known as da Sermoneta (Sermoneta, 1521 - Rome, 1575) Adoration of the Shepherds Oil on copper, 39 x 29.5 cm Frame 47 x 39 cm The refined taste, the refined poses, the definition of the anatomies, the vibrant light, allow us to identify for this painting the hand of a Mannerist painter active during the sixteenth century. In particular, the composition and stylistic research allow us to attribute the panel to Girolamo Siciolante, known as da Sermoneta (1521 - 1575). His first training took place under the guidance of Leonardo Grazia known as da Pistoia (1502 - 1548). Later he settled in Rome where he was able to see the painting of Raphael and Michelangelo from life and where he was first a pupil and then a collaborator of Perin del Vaga...

18th Century Convivial Scene Painting Oil on Canvas by Pietro Fabris
Located in Milan, IT
Attr. to Pietro Fabris (active in Naples, 1756 - 1792) Convivial scene Oil on canvas, 63 X 75 cm The canvas in question depicts a joyful banquet scene with characters dressed in traditional clothes typical of southern Italy, similar to Pietro Fabris. Much biographical information is lacking on this painter who was active in Naples between 1756 and 1792. It is assumed that he was of English origin, since he himself in many paintings is signed, next to his name, "English painter". Also appreciated in England, Fabris in 1768 exhibited in London at the Free Society and in 1772 at the Society of Artist. His vast known artistic production must therefore be included between the date of 1756, affixed to a Neapolitan scene (London, Trafalgar Galleries: see Spinosa, 1987, p. 162), and that of 1792, execution of the Pilgrimage to the sanctuary of the Madonna dell 'Arco (antiques market, formerly Matthiesen, London, published in Spinosa, 1987, fig. 410). This production includes numerous oils on canvas, gouaches and drawings, inspired by Neapolitan views and landscapes and popular scenes, festivals and costumes of southern Italy. In the initial phase, references to Carlo Bonavia and Gabriele Ricciardelli are marked, later enriched by collusions with the scenographic landscape painting of Antonio Joli...

By Herculaneum Pottery
Located in Norwich, GB
Mythology: Centeur, Youth with Lyre - Fresco from the discoveries at Herculaneum. Overall 49 x 37 cm copper engraving in later hand colour. Issued from the work "Delle Antichità di Ercolano - Le Pitture Antiche D´Ercolano e contorini..." detailing the latest discoveries from Herculaneum. References: Borroni II, 5422. Cicognara 2645. Ornamentstichslg. Berlin 3947. Graesse I, 145: "Ouvrage magnifique...” Very good overall condition. Light marginal spotting. The excavations at Heculaneum began in 1711, when a well was being dug for the new country house of Emmanuel Maurice, Duke of Elbeuf at Portici. The well turned out to have been sunk into the buried and richly ornamented proscenium of the theater of Herculaneum, and yielded several valuable marbles, including a statue of Hercules. The duke was extremely short of money. He smuggled the pieces to Rome to be restored, and then "gave" them to Prince Eugene of Savoy, his cousin. In 1738 Charles VII of Naples - after 1759, Charles III of Spain - began excavations to find objects for his private collection of antiquities, imposing tight security on the site. Interest was maintained by the hope of finding more objects of similar value to the first set of statues...

Male and female portrait, both in silk kimono, possibly textile dealers
By Christoffel Lubieniecki
Located in Amsterdam, NL
CHRISTOFFEL LUBIENIECKI (1659-1729) Pair of portraits of a gentleman and a lady, both in silk kimono, before a country house (circa 1680) Indistinctly signed “C.......” on a box under the man’s left hand Oil on canvas, 79.5 x 67 cm each Both sitters are portrayed wearing a silk “Japanese” coat. During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki) Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits. The loving execution of these contented burghers, enjoying the garden vistas of their country house, places him alongside Amsterdam portraitists such as Constantijn Netscher and Michiel van Musscher...

Jan Luyken, Defeat of the Spanish Armanda in 1588
By Matthäus Merian the Elder
Located in Norwich, GB
"Vertooninge van de ontsachlyke Spaansche Krygs vloot, in den Jaare 1588." Issued in: Bor, Pieter: "Nederlandsche Oorlogen", Amsterdam (ca 1680) Measures: Leaf: ca. 28,5 x 36 cm View: ca. 26 x 34 cm Fine hand color. On fine watermarked laid paper. Copper engraving of the downfall of the Spanish Armada of the ‘Onoverwinnelijke Vloot’, between 31 July and 12 August 1588. Naval battle between the Spanish and combined English and Dutch fleets in the canal. In the foreground, there is a large Spanish frigate being shot at by a small Dutch ship with the banner of the city of Leiden; on the left, there is a galley.  In particular, the engraving details shows the battle of Gravelines as the English sought to disrupt the Spanish fleet as it lay in wait for the army to board her ships. The fireships can be seen in the middle-right of the picture. It gives a feel for the compactness of the fleet and the disruption that the English hoped to cause in breaking it up. Johannes or Jan Luyken...

16th Century Adoration of the Shepherds Painting Oil on Copper by Carnevale
By Carnevale Studio
Located in Milan, IT
Domenico Carnevale (Sassuolo, 1524 - Modena, 1579) Adoration of the Shepherds Oil on copper, 42 x 28 cm Frame 54 x 36 cm Expert opinion of Prof. Emilio Negro The painting represents the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Child in the center, next to the Madonna kneeling in prayer and an angel behind her; towards him in the foreground a woman with a child in her arms, a shepherd with a sheep on the right, a bagpiper on the left and various other male and female characters turn to him. The architectures of the background, between which a glimpse of the landscape can be glimpsed, are hidden in the upper part by the clouds, where a "celestial glory" encamps with three flying angels. The painting shows mannerist characters that can be traced back to the second half of the sixteenth century, and can be traced back to an author from the Modena area, with stylistic references to the Bolognese Samacchini (1532 - 1577) and Passerotti (1529 - 1592). More precisely, it can be attributed to Domenico Carnevale (1524-1579), one of the most important masters of the sixteenth century active in the local area. The Carnival was formed in Emilia, his homeland, where he worked for many years. However, his works also show a clear Roman influence, dictated by a long experience in the city, during which he also dedicated himself to the restoration of the Sistine Chapel. Trained in the late-mannerist environment of Modena, he is also linked to the Parmesan Corrorese and Ferrarese Dossesque tradition; Carnival also always maintains a slight archaic sentiment in his work, The main stylistic reference must be identified in a work similar in subject and iconographic setting, coming from the church of the Pio Istituto Orfanelle di San Geminiano di Modena, currently part of the Art Collection of the Province, attributed to the same influence as the Carnival. Another interesting comparison should be identified with A Presentation of Jesus in the Temple...
