JohnGalliano 1stYearChristianDior Ballerina Silk Georgette Layered BiasCut Gown

About the Item

During his first year as French Christian Dior creative director in Paris for haute couture and ready-to-wear in 1997, John Galliano designed for his Spring/Summer 1998 button-enhanced collection this ballerina-like bias-cut silvery semi-transparent ribbed silk georgette layered plunging V-neck sleeveless evening gown, which was purchased at the flagship Christian Dior Boutique in Paris by the sole owner who never wore it. As an underlay, the otherwise see-through gown has a slip dress of grey bias-cut matte silk satin with a chevron shaped empire waist, triangular darted breasts, and super-thin spaghetti straps overlayed with wider sheer georgette straps. The overlay is decorated at the decollete with a flower-like cascading zigzag bow where the angled and folded empire-waist band meets the gathered bust. Adding a sense of windswept movement, Galliano made a surprising asymmetric seam in the front of the top skirt layer that enabled it to be gathered, draped and topstitched at the right hip, which balances the 29 silk-covered buttons along the other side of the torso with loops and a hook to fasten the gown. The French-size 42/U.S-size 10 will also fit a larger or smaller size while the only fabric restriction exists at the waist, where its buttons can be moved to contour your curves since there is no zipper. As the first British designer to lead a French haute-couture house, Galliano created collections for Dior from 1997-2011 where his streamlined ultra-feminine style carried on the progressive direction of the original designer. Earlier, he was creative director of Givenchy for a year, while he continued to create ready-to-wear collections for his eponymous London-cum-Paris brand since the late 1980s, when he won his first of many coveted fashion awards.
