Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" "Terra Spirea", The Gustavsberg Manufactory, Sweden, 1940
About the Item
Wilhelm Kage, "Farsta" Terra Spirea vase, The Gustavsberg Manufactory, Sweden 1950's Impressed "Farsta", "Gustavsberg G (hand) Studio" "KÅGE
This is one of Terra Spirea's most popular pieces, with small goblets that look like tulips. The inner bottom has a deep hole, which seems to suggest an amphora, a non-self-supporting vase. This is a rare form of terra spiraea, with only a few examples produced.
The base is unglazed, and this white matte base is often used for Kage's "Farsta" series of ceramic art works in general. A brick-reddish-brown glaze is applied to this base, and then various glazes are applied over the glaze.
The unglazed base is coated with a light brown glaze, and then a green glaze is applied on top. The green glaze is running moistly in part from below the waist, which is a nice view. The base has been scraped off with a small comb.
The contrast between white and dark green is beautiful, and the flowing soft curves of the body are also excellent. The body has a very glossy and graceful appearance among Terra Spirea.
There is an old elaborate repair to the mouth rim, but this may have been done by the previous owner who was concerned about the graceful appearance of this piece. In any case, there is no substitute for this beautiful piece.
