Brazilian Wingback Chairs

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Karpen Wingback Chairs in Luxuriously Soft Milk Chocolate Shearling, circa 1950s
By Karpen of California
Located in Saint Louis, MO
Stunning one of a kind pair of Mid-Century Modern wingback chairs by Karpen upholstered in super soft hand sewn Cocoa Milk Chocolate Shearling. The sort of chairs that become a family heirloom. A great reading chair. Perfect for a sexy mountain lodge or cigar room. A successful executive's evening chairs - perhaps fireside - while enjoying a robust Cabernet or a single malt scotch whiskey and cigar. Tall sculptural wingbacks have a commanding shape with an air of old money. The chairs are covered from top to bottom & front and back in several hand cut and sewn shearling hides. The Chocolate Shearling squares gently soften the formality to deliver super soft comfort and a luxurious look and sheen. You can't help but want to run your hand over the super soft shearling. Rich in color, the hides reflect light in different ways adding contrast and depth. Natural chestnut red highlights surface in the Cocoa Shearling. Tufted rounded backs - as originally designed - reinforce the chic and elegant vibe and invite you to lean back and relax. Wide seat and backs. Original sturdy walnut frame and conical legs. Shearling is highly durable and cleans up well - red wine approved. Seat cushions are upholstered in shearling on both sides in case you need a quick seat cushion flip - no expense spared. These Karpen Wingback shearling chairs are a special treat and wonderful acquisition. As glamorous and sexy today as when first made in the 1950s. Timeless. And they are the only pair available.
