Brazilian Coffee and Cocktail Tables

BRAZILIAN FURNITURE

More often than not, vintage mid-century Brazilian furniture designs, with their gleaming wood, soft leathers and inviting shapes, share a sensuous, unique quality that distinguishes them from the more rectilinear output of American and Scandinavian makers of the same era.

Commencing in the 1940s and '50s, a group of architects and designers transformed the local cultural landscape in Brazil, merging the modernist vernacular popular in Europe and the United States with the South American country's traditional techniques and indigenous materials.

Key mid-century influencers on Brazilian furniture design include natives Oscar NiemeyerSergio Rodrigues and José Zanine Caldas as well as such European immigrants as Joaquim TenreiroJean Gillon and Jorge Zalszupin. These creators frequently collaborated; for instance, Niemeyer, an internationally acclaimed architect, commissioned many of them to furnish his residential and institutional buildings.

The popularity of Brazilian modern furniture has made household names of these designers and other greats. Their particular brand of modernism is characterized by an émigré point of view (some were Lithuanian, German, Polish, Ukrainian, Portuguese, and Italian), a preference for highly figured indigenous Brazilian woods, a reverence for nature as an inspiration and an atelier or small-production mentality.

Hallmarks of Brazilian mid-century design include smooth, sculptural forms and the use of native woods like rosewoodjacaranda and pequi. The work of designers today exhibits many of the same qualities, though with a marked interest in exploring new materials (witness the Campana Brothers' stuffed-animal chairs) and an emphasis on looking inward rather than to other countries for inspiration.

Find a collection of vintage Brazilian furniture on 1stDibs that includes chairssofastables and more.

Midcentury ModeCoffee Table in Hardwood & Chrome by Sergio Rodrigues 1965 Brazil
By Sergio Rodrigues
Located in New York, NY
The “Amelia” coffee table has chrome-plated brass tube feet, solid jacaranda (Brazilian rosewood) and a rectangular crystal top of 20mm. The tables were originally designed in two shapes: Squared and rectangular which is the case of this piece For history buffs here it goes. Sergio Rodrigues was hired to develop furniture for some of the most important buildings of the newly built Brazilian, Brasilia, capital in the 60s. The Amelia model was used to decorate several buildings including the Palacio of Planalto (presidential office) and Congress as is shown in the images. This gorgeous coffee table would look great in any Mid-Century Modern, or postmodern type environment and the iconic design and Size will make of this coffee table an absolute must in everyone’s mid modern century collection. About Brazilian rosewood, also called Jacaranda, is perhaps one of the most beautiful woods in the world. It is regarded as one of the finest tone woods; hard, stiff, and highly resonant with a glass-like ring that sustains; it has a floral scent, like roses, thus the name. However, extensive overlogging over the past three centuries has virtually eliminated this tree from the Brazilian forests, so that today it is not supposed to be logged. The only Material that can be sold legally is old stock. By owning a vintage piece made of old Jacaranda, you’re not only getting a beautiful collectible but also helping this species to recuperate. Dimensions: H71, W117, D35 (cm) H28, W46.1, D13.8 (in) Literature (last images): • Oca’s manufacture manual showcasing the actual “Amelia” model • Vintage publication showcasing the rectangular version at the Palacio of Planalto in Brasilia • Acropole Magazine showcasing the table • Sergio Rodrigues book...

'Eleh' Side Table by Sérgio Rodrigues - 1960s
By Sergio Rodrigues

Side Table; Rio De Janeiro; Brazil; Hardwood; Mid-Century Modern; Bench; Sérgio Rodrigues; Minimalist; Wood; Veneer; Oscar Niemeyer; 'Eleh' side table, crafted by the renowned Brazilian hardwood master Sérgio Rodrigues (1914-2012), is an extraordinary and highly unique piece. With its veneer-covered wood box and solid wood legs, this side table from the 1960s showcases Rodrigues' exceptional talent for working with tropical woods in innovative ways. Its visually striking design effortlessly commands attention in any interior. Moreover, its inherent versatility allows it to function as both a practical surface for displaying decorative items and as a seating option, adapting seamlessly to various living spaces and design preferences. Originally conceived to complement the architectural vision of Oscar Niemeyer in the renowned Manchete building, this bench represents the pinnacle of design and aesthetics from the prosperous decades of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. The Manchete building stood as the distinguished headquarters of Bloch Enterprises, a dominant force in the Brazilian communications industry during that era. Inside, the meticulous selection of furnishings by Sérgio Rodrigues, including tables and chairs, harmoniously coexisted with awe-inspiring artworks by esteemed artists like Cândido Portinari...
