Landscape #II
By Merton Clivette
Located in San Francisco, CA
Artist: Merton Clivette (American, 1868-1931) Title: Landscape II Year: Circa 1925 Medium: Gouache Paper: Watercolor Size image: 17.35 x 22.65 inches Size paper: 17.35 x 22.65 inches Signature: Signed lower left by the artist Condition: Excellent Frame: Unframed About the artist. Clivette was born in Portage, Wisconsin, in 1868 as Merton Clive Cook, the youngest of five (four sons and one daughter). His father was a retired British sea captain, and his mother was an American of French, Scottish and Iroquois Indian stock. He stayed with a circus for about five years, traveling all over the Western United States, Canada and Mexico. They did shows for the army forts, for railroad workers and on Indian Reservations. Clivette settled in San Francisco in 1886, when he was offered a job as a reporter and theatrical writer for the San Francisco Call. He met Frederic Remington during this period. He was the first serious artist Clivette had met and he was an inspiration to him. Clivette had done some drawing and painting on the road during his vaudeville years, he had a natural facility for it, and he had had some formal art training as well. He had had some training in Europe and was aware of the modern art movement in Europe. Later in New York he participated in symposiums and workshops at the Art Students League. Around 1910 he gave up his stage career and began to paint full time. He was about 40 years old and was to continue to paint vigorously and prolifically for the remaining 22 years of his life, His style can be identified with the Expressionist Movement, His subjects include portraits (some quite realistic, others more generalized) Indians and horsemen, laborers, gentlemen and vamps, jungle animals and birds, fish, seascapes and landscapes. He was an active participant in the art world of New York. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists. In 1923 he showed at the Ainslee Art Gallery at 677 Fifth Ave., in 1925 at the Spanish Society in Brooklyn and in 1927 he had a solo show at the New Gallery, 600 Madison Ave. That same year there was also a solo show of his work in Paris at the Bernheim-Jeune Gallery, which included a catalogue. In 1929 he exhibited at the Art Center of the Roerich Museum in a group show of work from the collection of George Hellman. In 1930 he was in a show at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, "Painting and Sculpture by Living Americans" which also included the work of Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, William Glackens, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, George Luks and Mark Tobey and sculptors Gaston Lachaise and William Zorach among others. A description and critical analysis of his work in included in the book by Henry Rankin Poore...

This artwork titled "Time to go Home Papa" c.1950 is a watercolor on paper by noted American artist Darrell Craig McClure, 1903-1987 It is signed at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork size is 14.85 x 21.5 inches, framed is 24 x 30 inches. It is custom framed in a wooden gold frame, with gold color spacer. It is in excellent condition, the colors are fresh and bright. About the artist: Born in Ukiah Feb 25 1903, he showed his interest in cartooning at a very early age. One of his cartoons appeared in the old Ukiah Republican Press when he was nine years old. His love for the sailing schooners he served on as a young man inspired him to do a series of paintings on the vessels. McClure's work has been favorably received on both the East and West Coast, and a number of his paintings hang in the Maritime Museum in San Francisco. He studied at a cartoon school in San Francisco and the California School of Fine Arts. Instructors included Maynard Dixon, Harold Von Schmidt and Clarence Mackey, leading artists of the day. At the age of 17, he began his love affair with the sea, taking his first voyage on the Annie Johnson, destined for Hawaii. At 19 he shipped out for the East Coast aboard the freighter, Artiagas, and worked up and down the coast until friends were instrumental in getting him a job as an apprentice cartoonist with Hearst's King Features. He was with the newspaper for 37 years. Thirty-one were spent drawing the Annie Rooney cartoon. McClure’s work is held in numerous collections nationwide, many paintings are on display at the Kelley House, Mendocino, Mateo, NC,the San Juan Islands and the San Francisco Yacht...

Barn and Carriage
By Jake Lee
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork "Barn and Carriage" 1989 is a watercolor by noted Chinese/American artist Jake Lee, 1915-1991 It is inscribed Jake Lee and dated 89 on the back. The image size is 6 x 7.75 inches, framed is 13.35 x 14.65 inches. It is custom framed in a wooden gold frame, with gold color spacer and fabric matting. it is in excellent condition. About the artist. Jake Lee is emerging as the visual chronicler of the Chinese American past, especially the daily life in San Francisco Chinatown. No other artist, of any background, has presented that history as richly and as evocatively as Lee did in his many, striking compositions. Completed over a lifetime of work, Lee's paintings of historical sites, moments, and experiences give us an artistic vision. For much of his life, Lee was known primarily as a commercial artist who completed arresting illustrations for travel magazines, greeting cards, and book jackets. He was an art teacher, with many students who learned the use of water-soluble pigments to depict the many landscapes of mid-20th century California. Less well-known were his representations of the many places historically linked to the Chinese of the state and the West. To this day, few in America know about Chinese work in the fisheries, in the early wine industry, in 19th century urban industry, and in the colorful cultural life of San Francisco in the years before the Great Earthquake. At a time when most Americans thought Chinese Americans had just been laundrymen, houseboys, or Charlie Chan, characters they saw on television. As a visual historian, he connected us with the past, but foremost he was an artist. He presented appealing scenes for the visitor to San Francisco who wanted a visual memento. He mastered Western...

View down the River
By Patricia Prendergast
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
This is my interpretation of a section of the American River near my home. I tried to convey the feeling of peace that I get when walking in this area with the ducks and birds for company. I added the path for a little sense of mystery as to what we might see in those trees beyond the river. I created this piece on Ampersand Pastelbord and it will need framing for display.

About the Artist
Pastel artist Patricia Prendergast creates impressionist artworks that depict the rivers and landscapes near her home in Sacramento, California. With each nature vignette, she captures the sense of larger natural rhythms through quick mark-making, mauve undertones, and a tranquil and serene haziness. Her work recalls the paintings from the Hudson River School such as Thomas Cole and Asher Brown Durand. Before working on her pastels at home in her studio, she spends hours studying nature on walks along the river near her home. Since becoming an artist, she says “everything is more vivid - the beauty of light and shadow in the trees, the subtlety of the color of clouds, the sparkle and reflections in water.” Her work as been exhibited in solo shows around California. She is represented by UGallery.

Village by a Road
Located in San Francisco, CA
This artwork titled "Village by a Road" c 1940 is a watercolor on paper by noted artist Donald Jeffries Bear 1905-1952. It is signed in pencil at the lower right corner by the artist. The artwork size is 10.65 x 14.5 inches, framed size is 17 x 21 inches. Framed in original frame. The artwork is in good condition, paper is toned by time, the four extreme corners are slightly discolored by hanging tape. The frame is also in good condition with minor dents, the linen is slightly discolored by time. The item is over all in good condition. About the artist. Donald Jeffries Bear, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art's founding director from 1940 to 1952, was born on this day, February 5, 1905, in Terre Haute, Indiana. He previously served as the Director of the Denver Art Museum (1935-1940), regional advisor for the Federal Art Project (1935-38), and as principal of the World's Fair in New York (1938-39). While director of the SBMA, Bear served as president of the Western Association of Art Directors from 1943 to 1946. He was also an art critic and, last but not least, an artist. Bear was well travelled, spoke numerous foreign languages, and as a Renaissance man, he was a singular match for another local polymath, Wright S. Ludington. In addition to his duties as director, Bear was also the curator and was responsible for producing over 600 exhibitions during his tenure. The exhibitions were as remarkable for their quality as well as their quantity, including SBMA's inaugural exhibition, Painting Today and Yesterday in the United States (June 5―September 1, 1941), which featured pieces from George Bellows, Mary Cassatt, Robert Harnett, Childe Hassam, Robert Henri, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Georgia O'Keefe, and numerous others. Perhaps most remarkably, the SBMA displayed two of the most influential paintings of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso’s Guernica (1937) and Marcel Duchamp’s revolutionary Nude Descending a Staircase, No. 2 (1912) as part of the “Free France” exhibition in 1942. He was also responsible for producing numerous solo artist exhibitions, many of which were the first of their careers, including: William Dole, Clarence Hinkle...
