A wonderful, unique, beautifully glazed, quite rare, and special double-faced "Haniwa" pottery sculpture by American California studio pottery master ceramists Stan Bitters whose work was instrumental in shaping the organic modernist movement in the 1960s.
Bitters received his Bachelor of Arts degree in painting from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1958.
He also studied under Peter Voulkos at Otis College. After graduating, he worked for Hans Sumpf as the company's resident artist. During this time he created architectural murals, tiles, birdhouses, planters, and sculptural objects – designs that would earn him recognition later on as a pioneer of the organic modernist craft movement - many still some of the most iconic designs today.
Stan Bitters' work was featured as a part of the prestigious California Design series of exhibitions and annuals that chronicled art and design in California from 1954-1976. His works were also featured as part of a group show entitled Golden State of Craft 1960-1985 at the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, CA. This show was part of Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980, an unprecedented collaboration of more than 60 museums and other cultural institutions in Southern California, celebrating the birth of the Los Angeles art scene. The extremely large figure depicts Venus, Aphrodite of the Classical Greek legend. This model is of great rarity. Venus, is superbly painted, depicted in purple robes with green edging as she rise from the foam of the sea The condition is excellent. Only one other example is known- see below.

Victorian pair of Staffordshire pottery hand painted copper lustre dogs with split legs, circa 1860. They have well defined fur, a black muzzle and golden eyes. Measuring approximately height 22.86 cm / 9 inches by width at the base 18 cm / 7 inches, and depth 12 cm / 4.7 inches. The dogs have typical crazing, one dog has an old chip and crack to the underneath / side. Because these figurines were hand made they are not perfect, and that is their character and appeal.

"Lady Seated in Chair Reading" Money Box/ Still Bank by a. Biagioni, Circa 1925

Penny bank made by Italian Angelo Biagioni for the French market (see image with marking on the back of the chair), circa 1910. Biagioni, born in 1870, was a well known sculptor who crafted objects for resale to the European market. Money boxes (or still banks as they are called in America) were one of the more unique and more difficult items to find by this artist as most objects were basic uni-dimensional sculptered pieces. What makes it more rare is the unfortunate requirement to break and smash the bank open to get the coins out, as there was no mechanism to remove the money. The subject matter of the bank is that of a nicely dressed older lady seated in a chair reading a book.
The bank is in all original condition and paint with no restoration or touch-up of any kind.
This is a nice addition to any bank or toy collection, or simply to have as a "stand alone" unique item.
Dimensions : 4 1/4" deep x 3 3/8" wide x 8 5/8" high.
