Pionera del modernismo en Francia, Charlotte Perriand fue una de las figuras más influyentes del diseño y la arquitectura del siglo XX. En su larga carrera, la gramática estética de Perriand evolucionó constantemente, pasando de los muebles tubulares de acero de la Machine Age a un naturalismo lírico que se refleja en sus perdurables diseños de sillas, apliques, camas de día y otras obras.

Los estudios de Perriand en la Escuela de la Unión Central de Artes Decorativas la dejaron cautivada por Charles-Édouard "Le Corbusier" Jeanneret y su visión de una arquitectura nueva y racional. En 1924, se unió a su estudio para diseñar muebles junto con Pierre Jeanneret, socio y primo de Corbu.

En la década de 1960, Perriand amplió los límites de la prefabricación para producir viviendas de alta calidad y mobiliario a bajo coste para la estación de esquí francesa de Les Arcs. También adoptó un aspecto casi rústico de la época, diseñando sillas sencillas con armazones cortados con espigas y asientos de junco.
