Thomas Nozkowski biography
Thomas Nozkowski is recognized for his richly colored and intimately scaled abstract paintings and drawings that push the limits of visual language.
An awareness of perception and the desire to explore the possibilities of seeing, is at once grounded in reality for the artist and released from specific legibility. His concurrent practices of painting and drawing reflect on specific places and experiences—from the deeply symbolic to the notational—translating sensations and memories into abstract compositions.
Nozkowski began exhibiting in group shows in 1973 and made his solo debut in 1979. By 1982, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, had acquired a painting from an early one-person exhibition for its permanent collection. To date, Nozkowski’s paintings have been featured in more than 300 museum and gallery exhibitions worldwide, including over 80 solo shows.

Thomas Nozkowski
Thomas Nozkowski (23 mars 1944 - 9 mai 2019) est un peintre contemporain américain[1] Il s'est fait une place de choix grâce à ses peintures et dessins à petite échelle qui repoussent les limites du langage visuel. Nozkowski est né à Teaneck, dans le New Jersey, et a grandi à Dumont[2], où il a obtenu son diplôme au lycée Dumont en 1961[3]. Il a passé sa jeunesse dans la banlieue du New Jersey, admirant de loin la culture new-yorkaise avant de s'y installer après avoir obtenu son diplôme de fin d'études secondaires. À la fin de ses études secondaires, il obtient une bourse pour suivre un cours de peinture à la School of Education de l'université de New York, où il étudie avec Robert Kaupelis et Hale Woodruff[2] Pendant qu'il obtient son BFA à la Cooper Union, Nozkowski réalise des sculptures. Il a obtenu son diplôme en 1967. Il s'est ensuite tourné vers la peinture et a exposé certaines de ses premières œuvres dans des expositions collectives à la célèbre Betty Parsons Gallery[4].
