This work, inspired by Psalm 57 of the Old Testament has fine provenance. It was a gift of the Chairman of Benrus Watch Corporation to his good friends to welcome in the year 1967. (Shown here is a copy of the letter from Chairman Oscar M. Lazrus to recipients of this special gift featuring a quote from the Psalm of David, and introducing the distinguished American artist Ben Shahn, with this exquisite work.)

For the Leader; Al-tashheth. [A Psalm] of David; Michtam; when he fled from Saul, in the cave.
Be gracious unto me, O God, be gracious unto me,
For in Thee hath my soul taken refuge;
Yea, in the shadow of Thy wings will I take refuge,
Until calamities be overpast.
I will cry unto God Most high;
Unto God that accomplisheth it for me.
He will send from heaven, and save me,
When he that would swallow me up taunteth,
Selah
God shall send forth His mercy and His truth.
My soul is among lions, I do lie down among them that are aflame;
Even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows,
And their tongue a sharp sword.
Be Thou exalted, O God, above the heavens; Thy glory be above all the earth.
They have prepared a net for my steps,
My soul is bowed down;
They have digged a pit before me,
They are fallen into the midst thereof themselves.

BEN SHAHN Biography
Ben Shahn immigrated to the United States as a child and was apprenticed to a lithographer after finishing elementary school. In the 1920s, he studied at New York University and City College, and very briefly at the National Academy of Design. Shahn's first major success came with the 1932 exhibition of his series The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti. Shahn once said that he paints two things, "what I love and what I abhor," and during the Depression years his scenes of children playing in concrete urban parks, and of miners and construction workers engaged in their trades, reflect his admiration for the working American and his abhorrence of injustice and oppression. Throughout the 1930s Shahn worked for various government programs, and when the United States entered World War II, he joined the Graphic Arts Division of the Office of War Information, although only two of the many posters he designed were published. In the 1940s, Shahn turned to what he called personal realism." His late work is often symbolic, allegorical, or religious and reflects his belief that "if we are to have values, a spiritual life, a culture, these things must find their imagery and their interpretation through the arts."

Ben Shahn
Ben Shahn (1898 - 1969) était un artiste américain d'origine lituanienne. Il est surtout connu pour ses œuvres de réalisme social, ses opinions politiques de gauche et sa série de conférences publiée sous le titre The Shape of Content (La forme du contenu). Shahn a commencé son parcours d'artiste à New York, où il a d'abord suivi une formation de lithographe. Les premières expériences de Shahn en matière de lithographie et de graphisme sont visibles dans ses dernières gravures et peintures, qui combinent souvent texte et image. Shahn utilisait principalement la tempera à l'œuf, très prisée des réalistes sociaux. Shahn a mélangé différents genres artistiques. Son œuvre se distingue par l'absence de paysages, de natures mortes et de portraits traditionnels. Shahn a utilisé des langages visuels à la fois expressifs et précis, qu'il a rassemblés grâce à la cohérence de son trait autoritaire. Shahn est également connu pour son utilisation d'un symbolisme unique, souvent comparé à l'imagerie des dessins de Paul Klee. Son art est saisissant mais aussi introspectif. Il a souvent capturé des personnages plongés dans leur propre univers. Bien qu'il ait utilisé de nombreux supports, ses œuvres sont toujours réfléchies et ludiques.
