In La Cage. Je N’ai Pas Peur, Sandra Chevrier unfolds a powerful statement of courage and resilience that transcends apparent fragility. The female face, serene yet resolute, fixes a defiant gaze that seems to tell us no fear can cage the spirit. The artist masterfully fuses the texture of real skin with fragments of comic art—a pop language rich in symbolism and emotion.
Among these fragments appears Batman, the dark guardian, a symbol of the fight against darkness and relentless protector. His presence adds a profound layer of meaning: Batman is not just a hero, but also a figure who operates from the shadows, confronting his own fears in order to protect. In this context, the cage surrounding the female figure is not merely a prison but also a space from which inner fears are faced and overcome.
The tension between the fragility of the face and the iconic strength of Batman creates a powerful visual dialogue. The cage that confines becomes a place of resistance and courage, and the whole work transforms into an anthem to the ability to face darkness—not by denial, but with bravery and determination.
La Cage. Je N’ai Pas Peur is a visual meditation on fear, inner strength, and personal transformation. A piece that combines intimate drama with pop nostalgia and captivating elegance, inviting us to look beyond shadows and find the light within.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sandra Chevrier is a Canadian artist born in 1983. As far as this artist can remember, art has always been present in her life. She reminds with special detail a specific work she saw by the Canadian artist Heidi Taillefer titled "Detritus of devotion". This work transmitted so much to her that was then, at the early age of 14 years old, when she decided that she wanted to devote herself to transmit that emotion to others.
Her work has always been full of message. In Sandra Chevrier's own words, she uses art not only to express the beauty and the tragedy that surrounds her but as a language. Her intention is not to generate a social debate but she pretends the spectator to think, to make questions him or herself questions and this way to take some time to reflect on her work.
This artists' work is very diverse in terms of mediums, she works a lot with painting, mainly oil and watercolour, and experimenting with the new has taken her to fall in love with Chinese ink, collage and mixed media. Of some of her works we find graphic prints, mainly giclées and, in lower number, screenprints that can be hand finished. This tireless creativity and her willing to artistically evolve has taken her to other industries such as textile.
Sandra Chevrier's work is characteristic, among other things, for not being labelled. In between the most traditional fine arts and the most contemporary trends like urban art and graffiti, this artist rejects being pigeonholed in one style or another, since this would limit, in her own words, the possibilities of experimenting and evolving; her mind will always be open to learn from everything that surrounds her.
Untiring worker, always creative and eager collector, she dedicates her full time to her two passions, art and her son. She lives in Montreal, Canada, and even with her growing success and her long journeys, she has no intention of moving from there. She has done many solo shows both in United States and her native Canada as well as in the European continent, Japan, Australia or New Zealand.

Sandra Chevrier
Sandra Chevrier est une artiste contemporaine canadienne connue pour ses captivants portraits de femmes de la série The Cages. Née en 1983, Mme Chevrier a obtenu un baccalauréat en arts visuels et médiatiques à l'UQAM - L'Université du Québec à Montréal. Artiste autodidacte, Chevrier est tombé amoureux de l'art dès son enfance. Son art est rapidement devenu un langage à part entière. Au début, elle dessine des yeux, tout le temps. Cette obsession initiale est très visible dans son travail actuel. Dans ses portraits, Chevrier utilise les médiums contrastés de la peinture et des découpages de bandes dessinées pour produire ces portraits mixtes intenses, qui expriment des messages sous-jacents à travers le portrait féminin.
