David Armstrong était un photographe américain basé à New York, aux États-Unis. Armstrong est né en 1954 à Arlington, dans le Massachusetts. Il est l'un des quatre fils de Robert et Irma Armstrong. Il est diplômé de la Satya Community School, un lycée alternatif de Lincoln, dans le Massachusetts, où il rencontre Nan Goldin à l'âge de 14 ans. Le 26 octobre 2014, à l'âge de 60 ans, il décède à Los Angeles, en Californie, des suites d'un cancer du foie.
