David Roberts est né en dehors d'Édimbourg, en Écosse. À l'âge de 10 ans, il est devenu apprenti peintre en bâtiment. Il continue à peindre des maisons et, finalement, des scènes de théâtre à Édimbourg, puis à Londres. L'ami de M-One, A&M. Turner, a reconnu son talent artistique et l'a encouragé à devenir un artiste à plein temps.
En 1839, Roberts se rend en Égypte puis, en 1840, en Lande, pour terminer à Jérusalem. À son retour en Angleterre, F.G. Moon a accepté de publier des lithographies créées par Louis Haghe à partir des croquis et aquarelles de Roberts . Cette publication a été très appréciée et très populaire pour sa qualité esthétique, sa précision historique et topographique, et la description dramatique des scènes de Roberts. La reine Victoria et Charles Dickens figurent parmi les abonnés qui ont collectionné ses œuvres. Les lithographies en duotone de Roberts et de Haghe, souvent colorées, sont extrêmement recherchées aujourd'hui et leur valeur n'a cessé d'augmenter.
