Keith Haring - Impressions abstraites

Keith Haring a commencé à expérimenter avec ses lignes audacieuses et graphiques et ses personnages inspirés des dessins animés sur les murs des stations de métro de la ville de New York au début des années 1980. Il les appelait son "laboratoire", des lieux pour développer une nouvelle esthétique radicale basée sur une idéologie de création d'un art public véritablement démocratique.
Les peintures , les gravures et les peintures murales de Haring abordent les thèmes universels de la mort, de l'amour et du sexe, ainsi que des problèmes contemporains qu'il a vécus personnellement, comme les épidémies de crack-cocaïne et de sida. Elles tirent une grande partie de leur impact du puissant contraste entre ces sujets sérieux et le langage pictural joyeux et vibrant qu'il utilise pour les exprimer, plein de figures dansantes, de bébés, de chiens qui aboient, de cœurs et de lignes rythmiques, ainsi que de références à la culture pop.
Pour rendre son art encore plus accessible, en 1986, Haring a ouvert le Pop Shop à Soho. Préfigurant le mélange actuel de l'art et de la mode, le magasin vendait des marchandises et des articles de fantaisie comportant des images de Michele et de contemporains tels que Kenny Scharf et Jean-Michel Basquiat. Si ses œuvres comportent parfois du texte, il choisit la plupart du temps de communiquer par le dessin.
"Le dessin est toujours fondamentalement le même depuis la préhistoire", a déclaré Haring. "Il vit grâce à la magie.
