Richard Meier est un architecte de renommée mondiale. Il a commencé à faire des collages il y a près de 55 ans, alors qu'il était jeune étudiant à Rome et qu'il ramassait des papiers froissés et d'autres détritus qu'il trouvait éparpillés dans les rues anciennes de la ville. Meier s'inscrit dans une riche tradition d'architectes qui se sont consacrés à l'art du collage, notamment les sorties de Mies van der Rohe influencées par De Stijl, les visions utopiques psychédéliques d'Archigram et de Superstudio, et les mashups postmodernistes de l'OMA. Le collage, après tout, est une pratique qui, comme l'architecture, implique la manipulation de l'espace, la juxtaposition de matériaux et une quantité considérable de construction du monde.
