Richard Pettibone a été l'un des premiers artistes à utiliser les techniques d'appropriation. Né à Los Angeles, Pettibone a d'abord travaillé avec des boîtes d'ombres et des assemblages, illustrant son intérêt pour l'artisanat, la construction et le travail à l'échelle miniature.
