Robert Gwathmey Art
Américain, 1903-1988
Robert Gwathmey est devenu un artiste connu pour ses représentations réalistes sociales de la vie dans le Sud rural. Il fut l'un des premiers artistes blancs à créer des images dignes des Afro-Américains et le fit dans un style moderniste avec de nombreuses formes géométriques et une coloration audacieuse. Bien qu'il ait vécu par intermittence en Pennsylvanie et dans le Sud, il a passé la majeure partie de ses 45 années de carrière à New York, où son studio se trouvait au 1 West 68th Street. Il retourne fréquemment dans le Sud, où il se préoccupe des problèmes qui divisent les Noirs et les Blancs.
