Déclaration de l'artiste : "J'ai voulu devenir photographe à l'âge de 12 ans, lorsque ma sœur Grace m'a offert un appareil photo Kodak Box Brownie pour Noël. (Comme notre famille était assez pauvre, j'ai construit mon premier agrandisseur avec une boîte de farine d'avoine, et cette même boîte d'appareil photo a servi d'objectif. En 1947, juste après avoir obtenu mon diplôme de fin d'études secondaires, j'ai eu l'occasion de me rendre en Californie en voiture et en caravane avec mon oncle, ma tante et ma mère, et par la même occasion de prendre mes premières photos le long de la Route 66. Ensuite, après l'obtention de mon diplôme universitaire, un passage dans l'armée suivi d'une école de photographie, j'ai ouvert un studio de photographie publicitaire en 1954. Depuis plus de quarante ans, mon équipe et moi-même avons reçu de nombreuses récompenses locales, régionales et nationales pour nos réalisations photographiques, dont plusieurs "best of show". En 1958, j'ai étudié avec le célèbre photographe paysagiste Ansel Adams dans son atelier du parc national de Yosemite. En 1980, alors que je dirigeais encore mon studio de photographie publicitaire, j'ai commencé une étude photographique sérieuse des artefacts en décomposition le long de l'ancienne route mère de notre pays, la Route 66. L'ancienne route nationale reliant Chicago (Illinois) à Santa Monica (Californie) n'était pas un sujet populaire à l'époque, et j'ai donc classé mes transparents, sans savoir ce que j'en ferais un jour. Cependant, au fil du temps, la Route 66 est devenue un sujet d'intérêt national et, lorsque j'ai pris ma retraite en 1997, je suis retourné enregistrer les artefacts de la "Mother Road". Un certain nombre de mes photographies de la série Yosemite font partie de la collection Ansel et Virginia Adams au Center for Creative Photography de l'université d'Arizona à Tucson, et plusieurs de mes photographies de la Route 66 et d'autres sujets ont été acquis par le Milwaukee Art Museum. En ce moment, je prépare un livre sur mes expériences photographiques le long de la Route 66, de 1947 à aujourd'hui."
